1. needle

needle是縫衣服的針，穿針引線可以就是thread needle或者put thread through this needle。

另外，needle做動詞表示惹惱，激怒；（尤指）不斷地數落。

His mother was always needling him about getting a job.他母親總是數落他，讓他去找份工作。

3. partial

partial的本義是“不完全的，部分的“，如果你只喜歡某部分，說明你是“偏愛…的，喜歡…的“，也是“偏向一方的，偏袒的，偏心的“。

我並不特別愛吃魚。

The reporting in the papers is entirely partial and makes no attempt to be objective.

報紙上的報道完全不客觀，而且也沒打算保持客觀。

4. -proof

-proof這個後綴表示“防…的；抗…的“，比如：

a bullet-proof vest

防彈背心

frost-proof pots for the garden

花園裏用的防凍花盆

recession是（經濟）衰退期，那麼recession-proof自然就是抵禦經濟衰退，不受影響咯。

5. on the rebound

rebound做動詞和名詞都是“彈回；反彈；跳回”，on the rebound的意思是（因失戀而）處於心灰意懶的狀態。

Five months after Nick had left her, she married another man on the rebound.

尼克離開她5個月後，她心灰意冷地嫁給了另外一個男人。
