straight A: 全A生，全優生。這裏Blair又強調了一下a的發音。

Serena: Since the Dean handpicks the guests right after their interviews, I'm a shoo-in.
shoo in: a certain winner(穩操勝券)。shoo就是發出的“噓”聲，通常用來引起人或動物的注意力，並且把它們指向某個方向。所以shoo-in就有能控制住的意思，引申含義就是穩操勝券. e.g. Australia are shoo-in's for the cricket world cup.

Serena: Yale is foroverachieving bookworms and preppies-- the Blairs of the world.
bookworm: 書呆子. nerd/geek/dork，這些字都代表一個人因爲太專注某件事而看起來不太正常，如書呆子，而並非不聰明的呆。其中geek特指計算機方面特別有研究，特別專注的人。preppy: 學院派風格，可以表示大學預科生，也可以指學院派的打扮，GG裏的那些服裝(尤其是Blair和Nate)，就屬於preppy風格。

Lily: This one's a little edgier than I thought, but I like it.
edgy: Applied to books, music, or even haircuts which tend to challenge societal norms and reveal the dark side. Cutting edge.
Eleanor送來了兩套衣服，其中一條黑色的裙子(就是最後Lily在家裏穿，正好被Rufus看到的那套)，Lily用edgy來形容這條很sexy的裙子。edgy可以表示“前衛的，尖端的”，相當於cutting edgy, 就是“走在前沿的意思”。

New Haven: Yale的所在地就是Connecticut 州NewHaven縣(本集的片名就叫做New Haven Can Wait，取自1978 的電影Heaven CanWait)。這裏的invasion指的就是1779年7月4日在NewHaven發生的一場入侵戰爭（不要把它和獨立日混淆了，《獨立宣言》是1776年7月4日在費城正式通過的）

epiphany: (神的)顯現; (對事物真意的)領悟；用在這裏，就是“你終於頓悟到了”。

high horse: 騎在高馬上，引申含義就是目空一切，趾高氣揚、自以爲很了不起。get off your high horse就是不要擺架子的意思。
in demand: 有需要，銷路好。整句話的意思是Jenny不但沒有架子，而且很受歡迎。

put them on hold:保留，留貨。Blair注意到院長的祕書很喜歡收集瓷貓，就讓克里斯蒂拍賣行的人留了一套很罕見18世紀的瓷貓。

Chuck: I got tied up.

I got tied up: 我有事情脫不開身。
be done with: 我受夠了
strike out: 棒球賽裏就有strikeout這個說法。如果一個擊球手三次擊球不中，他就strike out，也就是“三振出局”。所以，strikeout的意思是，一件事做了幾次也不成功。有個跟它意思相反的詞組叫做pull it off, 意思是出人意料地做成了一件很困難的事情。

Q rating: 又叫做Q Score，用來衡量品牌、公司、名人或者電視劇的受歡迎程度的一種指標。不同於Nielsen(尼爾森)等指標，Q Score不但表示有多少人正在收看或者使用被調查的對象，還能反應人們對它的感受。

文化背景：

Blair: The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.
這段模仿的是電影“窈窕淑女”(My Fair Lady)". 奧黛麗赫本在劇中扮演ElizaDoolittle是一個賣花姑娘，出生貧寒，後來遇到了語言學家ProfessorHiggins，他從最簡單的發音開始，教她溫文爾雅的用語。這段The Rain in Spain"是電影中的一段歌曲，因爲Eliza總是把其中的”a”發成”eye”而不是長音”a”，所以教授就一直糾正她這句歌詞。具體可參見：_Rain_in_Spain
另外在Gossip Girl season 1裏有一集模仿了奧黛麗赫本另外一部電影Breakfast atTiffany，而s02e01裏Blair, Marcus(那個英國貴族),Chuck和Serena的外婆一起喝下午茶，談到Blair最喜歡的電影是Breakfast at Tiffany's, RomanHoliday和Funny Face.

Skull and Bones是由Yale裏的精英學生組成的兄弟會，非常祕密，以至於沒人知道這個組織究竟從事什麼活動，而這個組織的成員，也從不透露這個組織的活動。George 和他老爸都曾經是這個組織的成員，小布在自己的自傳裏提到過”[In my] senior year I joined Skull andBones, a secret society; so secret, I can't say anything more.”
此外，在2004年的美國總統大選中，民主黨和共和黨的候選人，都曾加入過這個兄弟會。所以說Skull and Bones是thesecret elite society in US controls theworld。而這也從另外一方面說明Yale是政治家的誕生地，所以在後面Chuck拍下那些學生尋歡作樂的照片，並要挾他們”You may bethe future leaders of America. You're now under the control of ChuckBass. I own you.”

Professional Children's School(PCS)是紐約的一所私立高中，專門培養有藝術才華的少年。除了後面提到的Vera Wang, Sex and the City的女主角Sarah Jessica Parker也是從這個學校畢業的。另外我google這個單詞的時候，發現釋小龍也在那裏讀了四年高中。
PCS is a coeducational independent day school enrolling 200 students ingrades 6-12. Founded over 90 years ago, PCS offers an academic, collegepreparatory education to students who are preparing for, or alreadypursuing, careers in the performing arts, entertainment or competitivesports, or who are drawn to a creative environment supportive of thearts.
Vera Wang:著名的服裝設計師，不管是在紅毯上，還是明星婚禮上，都能看到她的衣服。連明星都以能穿上她的手工縫製婚紗而感到自豪（自然也是天價，上海香格里拉大酒店的The PerfectWedding裏可以定到）。Wang不能按中文發音讀“王”，而是應該根據英語發音規則，念成bad裏那個”a”的發音。順便提另外一個品牌AnnaSui，雖然中文名是安娜蘇，但是Sui應該念"swi:"，就是sweet前面兩個音節。

Blair: Trying to come up with an answer for the Dean's parlor game(室內遊戲)?
Serena: You manipulated (耍計謀)your way in here?
Blair: I get what I want, Serena, just like I'm gonna win tonight. What's your answer? Oh, no, let me guess. Lauren Conrad.
Serena: Try George Sand.
Lauren Conrad是因出演電視劇The Hills而出名，日常生活中穿衣品味也不錯，是很多八卦雜誌拍攝的對象。這裏Blair諷刺Serena知道的“名人”要麼就是來自時尚圈，也沒就是來自娛樂圈，不可能知道什麼文化名人。
George Sand是19世紀的女作家，GeorgeSand是她的筆名，那個時代女性的地位是十分卑微的，更別提女人寫書這樣的事情了。所以她就用男人的名字出書，並且大獲成功。她不但起了個男人名字，還常常穿男裝，風流韻事也很多（在那個不知道“離婚”是什麼的年代裏，她的紅杏出牆還是很驚世駭俗的），總之，她就是一個很標新立異的新女性。不過我知道這個名字，不是因爲她的書，而是因爲她曾經和Chopin（肖邦）有過長達10年的同居生活，肖邦和她在一起的那段時光裏，創作了很多著名的曲子。
另外在這段對話之後，也就是24:00-24:20之間，背景音樂是Time is running out, 這首曲子本來是Muse組合的一首搖滾歌曲，在這裏被改編成小提琴演奏，我當時聽到的時候着實激動了一下，因爲這是我非常喜歡的一首歌，也曾經出現在電視劇Engourage裏。

Blair: Although I love Henry Ⅷ, I prefer Sir Thomas More. I think it's great that Pope Benedict canonized(封爲聖徒) him when he did.
Serena: Oh, thank you. Don't you mean Pope Pius Ⅺ?
Prof: That's quite right, Miss, uh...
Serena: Van Der Woodsen.
Prof: Van der woodsen, is it?
Serena: Hi.
Prof: Most people don't know their popes in succession.
Serena: Oh.
Prof: Excuse me. Can I borrow you for a minute?
Blair: How do you even know that? You slept through history class last year.
Serena:I love "The Tudors". Henry Cavill is a total babe.
The Tudors是showtime出品的連續劇（中文名：都鐸王朝），講的就是亨利八世那個王朝的故事。整部片子，除了華麗，還是華麗，無論是演員還是服飾，也難怪Serena會喜歡看這樣的歷史劇了。
紅線部分的人名都是那個時代的人物，也出現在The Tudors裏面。Sir Thomas More是哲學家，還有後面那幾個Pope，與亨利八世都有千絲萬縷的關係。至於Serena喜歡的Henry Cavill, 他在裏面扮演Charles Brandon(真的是很帥，難怪S說他是a total babe)，與亨利的妹妹結婚。
前段時間好萊塢出了個片子，叫做The Other Boleyn Girl,由Natalie Portman和Scarlett Johansson主演，講述了亨利八世和他的女人們之間的故事，包括Catherine ofAragon, Anne Boleyn及她的妹妹Mary Boleyn.如果對這段歷史感興趣的，可以去看看這部電影。

Not a word in a week, though I can't seem to escape her. Ever since my mother's show, Manhattan has turned into Serenaville.
這裏的Serenaville應該是借用了另外一部美劇的名字”Smallville”，就是大名鼎鼎的超人Clark Kent成長的地方，這個美劇講的就是他高中時代的故事。
