中國人在慶祝傳統新年時，有貼年畫(New Year pictures)的習俗。這在宋朝的史料中有所記載。廣大農村尤其流行這個習俗。

在新年來臨之際每個家庭都忙於往門、窗戶和牆上貼彩色的年畫或剪紙(paper-cut)。傳統的年畫是用簡單清晰的線條和明亮的色彩描繪出繁榮的景象。

年畫表達的主題範圍很廣，但所有年畫傳遞的信息一直都是好運、節日氣息或人們希望的其他好事情。

年畫(New Year painting)是最受中國家庭歡迎的民間手工藝術形式之一。年畫一般在春節時張貼。因年畫在新的一年到來後纔會被換，故稱“年畫”。

年畫是中國民間美術中較大的一個藝術門類，它始於古代的“門神畫(door-god picture) 據說貼在家門上可以辟邪。

同時，年畫還可以美化居家環境，增添節日的喜慶氣氛，爲家人帶來幸福和歡樂，表達了民衆嚮往美好生活的願望。
