"How are they?"
"We get along."
"What about inside?"
"I don't go inside."
"Sethe, if I'm here with you, with Denver, you can go anywhere you want. Jump, if you want to,'cause I'll catch you, girl. I'll catch you "fore you fall. Go as far inside as you need to, I'll hold yourankles. Make sure you get back out. I'm not saying this because I need a place to stay. That's thelast thing I need. I told you, I'm a walking man, but I been heading in this direction for seven years.
Walking all around this place. Upstate, downstate, east, west; I been in territory ain't got no name,never staying nowhere long. But when I got here and sat out there on the porch, waiting for you,well, I knew it wasn't the place I was heading toward; it was you. We can make a life, girl. A life."
"I don't know. I don't know."
"Leave it to me. See how it goes. No promises, if you don't want to make any. Just see how it right?"
"All right."
"You willing to leave it to me?"
"Well — some of it."
"Some?" he smiled. "Okay. Here's some. There's a carnival in town. Thursday, tomorrow, is forcoloreds and I got two dollars. Me and you and Denver gonna spend every penny of it. What yousay?""No" is what she said. At least what she started out saying (what would her boss say if she took aday off?), but even when she said it she was thinking how much her eyes enjoyed looking in hisface.

“那是什麼樣？”
“我們挺合得來。”
“內心呢？”
“我不進入內心。”
“塞絲，有我在這兒陪着你，陪着丹芙，你想去哪兒就去哪兒。你想跳就跳吧，我會接着你的，姑娘。我會在你摔倒之前就接住你。你在心裏想走多遠就走多遠，我會握住你的腳脖子。保證你能再走出來。我不是爲了能有個地方待才這麼說的。那是我最不需要的東西。我說了，我是個過路客，可是我已經朝這個方向走了七年了。
在這一帶轉來轉去。北邊的州，南邊的州，東邊的，西邊的；沒有名字的地方我也去過，在哪兒都不久留。可是我到了這兒，坐在門廊上等着你，這時我才知道，我不是奔這個地方來的，是奔你。我們能創造一種生活，姑娘。一種生活。”
“我不知道。我不知道。”
“交給我吧。看看會怎麼樣。你要是不願意就先別答應。先看看會怎麼樣。好嗎？”
“好吧。”
“你願意交給我來幹嗎？”
“嗯———一部分。”
“一部分？”他笑了，“好極了。先給你一部分。城裏有個狂歡節。星期四，明天，是黑人專場。我有兩塊錢。我、你，還有丹芙，咱們去把它花個一個子兒不剩。你說怎麼樣？”她的回答是“不”。至少一開始是這麼說的（她要是請一天假老闆會怎麼說？），可是儘管嘴上這麼說，她心裏卻一直在想，她的眼睛是多麼愛看他的臉呀。
