BEIJING - Nearly one in every five Chinese people were rural migrant workers - those from rural areas working in cities - by the end of last year, official statistics showed on Friday.
北京消息，據週五發佈的官方統計數據顯示，截至2012年底，近五分之一的中國人是農民工——指來自偏遠地區在城市工作的人羣。

【講解】

rural migrant worker就是農民工。
據國家統計局發佈的報告顯示，2012年末全國農民工總量爲26261萬人，比上年增長3.9%，佔全國人口（total population）的19.39%。其中，外出農民工（rural workers employed outside their hometowns）16336萬人，增長3.0%；本地農民工（those employed in their hometowns）9925萬人，增長5.4%。
自改革開放政策（reform and opening-up policy）實施（implementation）的30多年來以來，農民工（migrant workers）的數量隨着中國快速的經濟擴張（economic expansion）而激增。在中國城市化（urbanized）和工業化（industrialized）的進程中，城市中大量的勞動力需求（labor demand）和機遇吸引了數百萬人離開自己的家鄉。
上個月國務院發佈的2013年一號文件（first policy document）中提出，爲完成國家的城市化進程（urbanization），使農民工成爲城市居民（urban residents）是政府的重要任務。中國將繼續推進戶籍制度（household registration system）改革，放鬆中小型城市（small and medium-sized cities）的居民許可要求。
中國還將加強農民工的職業培訓（professional training），保證農民工的社會保障（social security），保護農民工的合法權益（rights and interests）。
