1. 地道表達
【地道短語】turn thumbs down on
【解詞釋義】該習語源於古羅馬的競技決鬥活動。競技場上，獲勝的角鬥士只能得到一支棕桐作爲獎賞，而敗陣的角鬥士命運則取決於觀衆的手勢。觀衆的拇指向上（turn thumb up）就可以繞他的命，反之，如果大多數觀衆的拇指向下（turn thumb down），就以爲着要殺死鬥敗者。該習語由此而產生，引申爲“反對，決絕，不予饒恕，置於死地”等意思，現在多用來表示“不贊成，反對”。
【支持範例】Most people in this country turn thumbs down on gambling.
這個國家的大多數人都反對賭博。
John continues to turn thumbs down on drugs of any kind.
約翰一如既往地討厭任何形式的吸毒。
