【職場英語行話連篇】所謂入鄉隨俗要從稱呼做起
與同事相處，稱呼是必不可少的。有的公司喜歡畢恭畢敬地加上頭銜，有的公司可能比較隨意地直呼其名，還有的公司會更親切地用暱稱……無論用哪種方式，關鍵是你得“入企隨俗”！
Palmer: How's everything going, Tom? I know you.ve been pretty swamped lately.
Palmer: Tom，一切都順利嗎？我知道你近來非常忙。
Tom: Everything's going well, Mr. Palmer. Except for one thing.
Tom: 一切順利，Palmer先生，除了一件事……
Palmer: Oh? What is it?
Palmer: 噢？是什麼事？
Tom: This copier. I really think we need to buy a new one. It's been breaking down about twice a week.
Tom: 是這臺複印機。我認爲我們需要買一臺新的。因爲差不多每個星期它都會壞兩次。
Palmer: Is that so? That must really make things difficult. I'll have Dennis take care of it right away.
Palmer: 是嗎？做起事來一定很麻煩吧！我馬上叫丹尼斯來處理。
Tom: Thank you, Mr. Palmer.
Tom: 謝謝你，Palmer先生。
Palmer: By the way, there's another change I want to make, if it's okay with you.
Palmer: 順便提一下，假若你同意的話，我另外有一件事要你改一改。
Tom: What's that, Mr. Palmer?
Tom: 什麼事，Palmer先生？
Palmer: That's it – “Mr. Palmer.” I'd feel much more comfortable if you'd call me Don. Everyone else does.
Palmer: 那就是Mr. Palmer。假如你能叫我Don的話，我會覺得比較舒服，其他的人都這麼叫我。
Tom: Oh…certainly, Mr…, Don. I guess I'm still not used to calling my superiors by their first name. In our country, we sometimes work with people for months before we even learn their first name.
Tom: 哦，當然，Palmer先……不對，Don。我還是有點不習慣對上司直呼其名。在我國，即使在一起工作了很長一段時間，我們甚至還不知道他們的名字叫什麼。
Palmer: Well, this is NY. Here, we can go for months without learning a person's last name.
Palmer: 可這兒是紐約呀。我們有時在一起很久，卻不知道對方的姓氏。
*對話中出現了一個單詞swamped。to be swamped 的意思是 to have too much work to do，陷入大量工作。swamp一般是指“沼澤地”，而如果你說 swamped with work，那就表示工作太多，好像陷進了沼澤地一樣，讓你喘不過氣。
