The parents of a Japanese girl who was abducted by North Korea nearly four decades ago on Monday said meeting with her daughter was 'miraculous' and 'a dream come true.'

Shigeru and Sakie Yokota, the parents of Megumi Yokota, who was 13 when she was snatched by North Korean operatives in 1977, met their North Korean-born granddaughter for the first time last week in Mongolia.

'We were very glad that this came to be, in a quiet manner, as a family, ' Ms. Yokota said during a news conference where the couple reflected on their meeting with Kim Eun Kyung, whom Japanese officials described as the daughter of Megumi.

'She looked very similar to what Megumi looked like,' Ms. Yokota said, adding that Ms. Kim treated them with her own cooking during the meeting.

North Korea in 2002 acknowledged abducting Megumi and 12 other Japanese, and said she died in 1994 after marrying a South Korean abductee and giving birth to a girl. The Yokotas haven't accepted the explanation, and they have demanded that North Korea return their daughter. Ms. Yokota said no new details of Megumi were revealed, saying she didn't ask since she did not want political affairs to come in the way of the meeting.

'We've decided to believe that she must be doing fine,' Ms. Yokota said. She said Ms. Kim, her husband, and their 10-month-old daughter was present at the meeting held in Ulaanbaatar between March 10-14.

North Korea abducted dozens, or possibly hundreds of Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s when Pyongyang sought citizens of various nationalities to train North Korean agents for overseas espionage activities. The cases have become one of Japan's immovable talking points in its dealings with the hermit nation.

The Yokota's search for Megumi, in particular, has captured the hearts of the Japanese, and she has been subject of various documentaries and remains the poster child for the campaign by abductees' families and support groups.

'The government has been working to realize the meeting from a humanitarian perspective,' Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters Monday, saying that news of the meeting 'brought a lump to my throat.' The abductions issue has been one of Mr. Abe's top priorities that he has vowed to solve during his tenure.
