不論在北美的課堂上還是辦公室裏，你經常能聽到這樣一個短語：Make Sense.當你的教授給你講題的時候他會經常說“Does that make sense?”當你的同僚不同意某個主意的時候就會說“It does not really make sense to me.”
在問句“Does it make sense?”裏相比較“Do you undersand?”顯得語氣柔和一些。“Does it make sense”的focus在於這件事情是否能讓你理解，而不是你是不是足夠聰明來理解這個問題。重點強調不一樣，因此美國人講解一個問題的時候常用“Does it make sense?”而不是“Do you understand?”另外呢，雖然同“I don't understand”所表達的意思相似，但是“It does not make sense to me”會顯得更地道，情感更強烈。上課提出質疑時，向同事表達不解時，就可以用“It does not make sense to me.”他們就會繼續爲你講解了。
