MANILA, May 17 (Reuters) - The Philippinegovernment has told the European Union it will nolonger accept development aid from the bloc, puttingat risk programmes to assist poor and conflict-hitregions in the country's south, Europe's ambassadorsaid on Wednesday. Ambassador Franz Jessen saidthe decision to cut aid from the EU, a strong criticof President Rodrigo Duterte's drugs war, wouldmean the loss of about 250 million Euros ($278.73million) worth of grants mostly allocated to Muslimcommunities. Manila's move comes days afterDuterte won billions of dollars in pledges from China after attending the Belt and Road summitin Beijing.

NEW ORLEANS -- The city of New Orleans lateTuesday began taking down a monument to Gen.P.G.T Beauregard - the third of four Confederate-eramonuments slated for removal.

By 4:10 a.m., the Beauregard statue had been removed from its pedastal, which city officialssaid would be left in place for now but with Beauregard's name removed, according to CBS NewOrleans affiliate WWL-TV.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu first proposed removing the monuments in 2015, and the City Councilapproved the move that year. But the process was stuck in legal limbo for over a year assupporters fought to keep them up.
