茶話會第434期:北京人爲什麼牛

今天的節目一開始，我想講段子。生活中我是一個比較會講冷笑話(bad joke)的人。不妨讓大家來感受一下：有人問我北京人爲什麼這麼牛X，我默默深吸了一口氣、笑着看了看他。他不服、學我他也深吸了一口氣、享年25歲。這是在微信朋友圈看到的，我知道大家其實並沒有聽懂。這個小段子其實映射的是北京的霧霾，因爲深吸了一口氣、享年25歲。When the pollution gets really serious, I can't even see the buildings next to me. 霧霾太嚴重了，附近的建築都看不清了。在今天的節目中，就跟大家分享一下關於霧霾的英文表達。

1. The smog is severe!
霧霾太嚴重了Smog就是霧的意思。Black smog reduced visibility to about fifty yards. 黑色的煙霧使能見度降到大約五十碼左右。Reduce to 下降到。能見度就是visibility，同時呢這個詞的形容詞形式就是visible可見的。說霧霾太嚴重了，太severe了。Severe就是嚴重的意思。There is a severe shortage of fuel. 燃料嚴重短缺。Severe還有嚴厲的意思，比如說：We must be severe with ourselves and lenient with others. 我們必須嚴於律己寬以待人。這八個字也是我的信條之一：嚴於律己寬以待人-be severe with ourselves and lenient with others.

我很擔心我兒子的健康。如果空氣質量一直這麼差的話，他就不能去外面玩。Concern about，擔心的意思，concerned about my son's health-擔心兒子的健康。Because of the air pollution，原因就是空氣污染air pollution。Be able to do sth.--可以去做某事。比如：Will your be able to finish the work come the end of this year? 今年年底來到時，你能夠完成工作嗎？Will or will not, that is really a question.由於霧霾天氣，媽媽擔心兒子的健康，因爲如果空氣質量一直這麼差的話，他就不能去外面玩：I'm very concerned about my son's health. If the air pollution stays like this, he won't ever be able to leave the house.

3. Strong cold air is in the forecast to blow away the smog.
天氣預報說有強冷空氣要來吹散霧霾了。好消息。天氣預報是the weather forecast。 Blow away，blow是吹的意思，那blow away就是吹走、颳走。Blow away the smog吹散霧霾。Blow away還有一個意思，是什麼呢？Nancy blew away the rest of the skaters. 南希戰勝了其他的滑冰運動員。Blow away在這裏其實是打敗的意思。下一個例句：The loud noise from the concert blew me away. 演唱會的歌聲把我給征服了。再詳細點兒，這個blow away就是(to excite a person very much， to cause someone great pleasure or surprise. 使某人興奮起來，給某人帶來快樂或者驚喜。
