Generally, meeting with old people is uninteresting as they talk unnecessarily. But my meeting with Mr Moe Myaing was really an interesting one. He is a retired army person and lives to my next door.
一般來說，與老人見面是無趣的，因爲他們沒有必要說話。但是我和莫明先生的會面真的很有趣。他是一個退役軍人，住在我的隔壁。
Mr Moe Myaing is passing his retired life now. He lives with his family in the opposite apartment of us in Yangon. He has been living in this apartment even before we started living here. He got his retirement in the early part of the year 2000 from the Myanmar Army as a colonel. Now he loves to recall the memories of his olden days. I find interest in talking with him. He owns a tall figure with a height of six feet and two inches. Besides, he looks strong even in his 70. And he is smart with an adventurer look. He loves to pass times in physical exercise and sports. In fact, he loves to take part in different sports in the local sporting club.
莫明正過着退休生活。他和他的家人住在仰光我們對面的公寓裏。甚至在我們住在這裏之前，他就住在這個公寓裏了。2000年初，他以上校的身份從緬甸陸軍退役。現在他喜歡回憶他過去的日子。我發現和他談話很有趣。他有一個六英尺二英寸高的身材。此外，他看起來很強壯，即使在他70歲。他很聰明，有冒險精神。他喜歡在體育運動中消磨時間。事實上，他喜歡參加當地體育俱樂部的各種運動。
I first saw him in the corridor of the apartment block. He was having some sort of physical exercise. I knew that there is a retired colonel living in this apartment but did not have idea that he would be the man. In fact, I thought the colonel would be someone less old than him. Actually, I did not have idea that he is a bit older than I thought. But later, I discovered that he is an interesting man and knows how to attract people. Often he visits my dad at our home and we also are invited to his apartment in many occasions. Now, the relationship with him and his family with mine is excellent. Sometimes, I pass my leisure hours with him and listen to his heroic activities while he served in military.
我第一次見到他是在公寓樓的走廊上。他正在進行某種體育鍛煉。我知道這個公寓裏住着一位退休上校，但沒想到他就是那個人。事實上，我原以爲上校年紀會比他小。事實上，我不知道他比我想象的要大一點。但後來，我發現他是一個有趣的人，知道如何吸引人。他經常去我家看我爸爸，我們也經常被邀請去他的公寓。現在，我和他以及他的家人的關係非常好。有時，我和他一起度過閒暇時光，聽他在軍隊服役時的英雄事蹟。
First of all, I like to appreciate his outspoken nature. He loves to speak straight. Besides, he tries to keep his promises and commitments. When he makes any promise, he is sure that he would be successful in keeping the promise. In fact, this is not his nature that without being confirmed, he makes any commitments. He is also brave and knows how to deal with difficult situations. I also like his spirit to continue physical activities in such an age. He can run faster than anyone else, takes part in sports like badminton and football. He also loves to swim. Mr Myaing took me to his swimming club and I was amazed at his performance of swimming. Further, he is a humble man and never behaves rudely with anyone. Controlling the anger is the other quality I see in him.

I admire Mr Myaing for some particular reasons. He is a highly educated and trained person. Despite being an army, he knows how to deal with the civilians while a majority of the army personnel are unable to deal with the ordinary citizens. They have some ideas that they are someone superior and to be worshipped. But there are no such arrogances in this person. He is a nice guy and loves to gossip over a wide number of issues. He loves to meet with newer people and particularly with kids. I also have learnt many aspects from him which are really effective in my real-life situations. He has taught me the matters with great enthusiasm. For all such reasons, I admire him most.

My great grandma has been away for more than ten years now. On account of my young age at that time, my memory about her is scarce and obscure. However, there is something engraved in my mind that brings about warmth and touching all the time.
When I was young, the pressure of studying hadn’t been imposed on me, which allowed me to come visit my great grandma every one or two weeks. My great grandma was illiterate, forced to struggle for life without being able to sit in the classroom for the pursuit of knowledge. The sufferings and toughness in my great grandma’s youth didn’t rip off her kindness and patience. Every time I came to her house, she would prepare a handful dough to teach me how to make chicken, dogs or rabbits out of the dough. I always made a mess and wasted the dough, while the dough in my great grandma’s hands would always turn into various kinds of animals.
During this period of time, with my eyes staring at my great grandma, time always fled. The memory of the scene that great grandma held my hands to teach me is so clear that the joy and satisfaction from my inner heart will run through the whole body when it recalls. No matter how many times I messed up with the dough, she never gave up teaching me with patience and never lost her temper. No surprise, not something extremely meaningful but it became one of the happiest moments in my childhood. The care and love that great grandma gave me is different from that from parents. At that time, I could forget everything annoying me and involve myself in the pure enjoyment. Therefore, when I left my great grandma’s home, my body was full of energy to go back to classroom and continue learning.
Since my great grandma was gone, I haven’t find another way to calm my spirit for a long time. In the modern world, everyone tries their best for gaining a better life. Sometimes, the lack of spirit nurturing might appear but neglected by people. The calmness and relaxation of the inner heart is gradually becoming important. That might be the reason why this memory never fades away in my mind.

【頭腦風暴】
描述一個你所尊敬的老人，人物類型的口語問題是大家最熟悉不過的，如果在考場上抽到這樣類型的題目大約你會在心裏偷笑，簡直比中彩票還要高興了吧。
言歸正傳，大家看到題目的第一反應是什麼呢?大家很快就能鎖定題目的關鍵名詞“老人”，那麼很容易就能夠想到自己的外公外婆爺爺奶奶。然後這個時候大家又注意到關鍵形容詞“值得尊敬”，大家會開始苦思冥想，grandparents對我很好，但是他做了什麼事蹟呢?太瑣碎的事情似乎讓“值得尊敬”不夠有說服力。或者有些童鞋的腦海裏會突然冒出一些非常高端大氣上檔次的人物，比如說袁隆平。袁隆平解決了中國十幾億人吃飯的問題，哇太值得人尊重了，恩他也是老人，符合要求，很好!但是除了他的名字其餘我一句話都冒不出來啊喂!最後放棄這個想法。這樣就平白浪費了很多準備時間。
口語話題千千萬萬，我們在平時的口語練習當中可以塑造這麼一個“瑪麗蘇/湯姆蘇”類型的人物，他能夠上天入地無所不能。他可以年輕可以年老，他擁有所有口語考試中可能出現的特徵。
當然了，我們準備得很充分，卻也不要把所有的文字一股腦地寫到筆記本上(考官：呵呵?)。只需要有條理地羅列幾條就OK。
Sample answer：
The old person I would like to describe is my English teacher, Adam. He teach me oral English. Last year, I met him in class.
Adam is from American. He has white hair and a pair of green eyes, very special right, just like expensive emerald in jewelry stores. He always wears his hippes multi-pocket jeans, which he calls ‘his style’. My classmates consider it funny, I think it suits him quite well, though. Besides, he is very friendly to us, because except that jeans, what he usually wears is a smiling face.
In my eyes, He has a sense of humor. He feels free to make fun of himself in class. He is so talkative that we give a nick name called ‘Mr punchline’. And after class, he sometimes hang out with us for sports or other activities. So friendly in my point of view.
He has talent I suppose. He could imitate many characters speaking English on screen like Minions, which is my favourite characters by the way.
All the above is reasons for my respect to him. However, the most reason why I respect him is that he is responsible for everyone of his student. He care all of us, indeed. We do like him and his class.
So that is Adam, the old man I respect so much.

10個地道雅思口語表達分享
1. How many pages did you end up with? 你的(報告)最後有幾頁?
依照大多數人的習慣, “你的報告最後有幾頁”這句話通常會把它翻譯成, “How many pages did you get finally?”是不是啊?但事實上如果是老美來說這句話, 他們會說的是， “How many pages did you end up with?”也就是說, 當老美提到“最後”這個概念時, 他們通常用的是 end up with 這個片語。所以如果你要說，“看了那麼多的房子之後, 我們最後還是買了湖邊的那棟房子”就是，“After seeing so many houses, we ended up with buying the one on the lakeside.”
所以 End up with 也有“最後有什麼樣結果”的意思，再舉個六人行 (Friends)裏面的例子，有一次 Monica 問 Rachel 和牙醫師約會的結果怎樣? 她的回答就是，“We ended up having sex on his chair.” (我們結果在他的椅子上發生關係)Monica 聽了之後差點沒昏倒。 我想大家不難從這幾個例子當中發現，在許多地方用 end up with 會比 finally 來得更爲恰當。
2. That project turned out to be a big flop. 那個計劃變成一個大失敗。
講到“變成...”這個動詞，become 會是許多人唯一能想到的英文翻譯。所以這個例句許多人會翻成“That project became a big flop.”對，這樣講完全沒錯，但各位下次不妨可以學老美用 turn out 這個片語來代替 become， 這樣子這個句子就會變成 “That project turned out to be a big flop.” 聽起來有沒有比較順口呢?
另外老師上課時在講到數學運算時也常說 turn out 例如最常見的，“If you multiply the first equation by 2, the two equations will turn out to be exactly the same.”(如果你把第一個式子乘以 2, 這兩個式子就會完全一樣。)
3. I ate salad, soup, steak and pudding. On top of that, I drank two cups of coffee. 我吃了沙拉，湯，牛排和布丁，除此之外，我還喝了兩杯咖啡。
講到除了什麼之外，以前老師教我們的都是 besides, in addition to (包含的除外)，不然就是 except(不包含的除外, 詳見注1)所以這個例句一般人的講法會是，“Besides/In addition to salad, soup steak and pudding, I drank two cups of coffee.” 但除了 besides/in addition to 之外，老美也很喜歡用 on top of that 這個片語。而且當他們在講 on top of that 都還會特別強調加強語氣，通常能表現出一種誇大的語氣來吸引聽者的注意。比方說吧，“她的未婚夫不但有五棟房子和二部豪華轎車，銀行裏還有十億元的存款” 在這裏重點是最後的十億元存款，所以句子這麼造，“Her fiancé has five houses and two luxury cars. On top of that, he has 1 billion dollars in the bank.”
4. We’re gonna have two parties back-to-back next weekend. 下週末我們將連續有兩場派對。
“連續”這個概念在英文中的說法有很多。最簡單的可以用單一副詞 consecutively，例如例句就可以翻成 “We’re gonna have two parties consecutively next weekend.”當然你也可以用片語 in a row 或是 back-to-back 來替換這個 consecutively。In a row 原意是排成一列，例如 three days in a row 就是三天排成一列，也就連續三天的意思。而 back-to-back 字面上則是“背貼背”, 當然也有連續的意思在內。所以比方說期末考到了，哇咧，明天居然連續考三科。這個用英文說出來就是“We’ll have three tests in a row tomorrow.”或是 “We’ll have three tests back-to-back tomorrow.”
5. I have another class right after this. 我隨後(下一堂)還有課。
我剛來美國時常被諸如，“我隨後(下一堂)還有課”，“下一輛公車隨後就到”這樣的句子困擾。原因是我覺得“隨後”如果翻成 immediately(馬上)似乎不太對，但又想不出什麼其它替代方案。後來我才慢慢了解原來“隨後”就是用 right after 或是 right behind。(單指空間上的之後)所以要是上課時坐隔壁的不帥的男生問你，“Have a cup of coffee with me after class?”(下課後一起去喝杯咖啡嗎?) 拒絕他就是， “I’m sorry, but I have another class right after this.” (很抱歉耶, 我下一堂還有課。)或是像有時候公車擠不上去，司機伯伯就會告訴我，“There is another bus right behind this one.”(下一輛公車隨後就到。)
提醒各位，right 在英文中常常有“馬上”的意思，例如，“I will be right back.” 就是我馬上回來的意思。所以如果你去掉 right 單說 “I have another class after this.”當然也可以，但意思會變成，“我之後還有課”(也許是下一堂，下二堂有課不一定)，但如果是用 right after this class 則很明確地指出了是“下一堂”。
6. Knock it off. I can’t stand this anymore. 停止吧!我再也不能忍受了。
“停止”這個動作在英文中有許多的表示方式，例如最簡單的 stop 就是一例，但是除了簡單的 stop 之外， 老美也喜歡說，“Knock it off.”或者是 “Cut it out.”例如看到兩個人在打架，你可以趕快說，“Knock it off”或者是 “Cut it out.”來勸他們快點住手。
Knock off 這個片語還有許多其它的用法， 像是颱風把高壓線給吹掉了，在這裏你就可以說，“The typhoon knocked the power line off.”或是上數學課時老師說把 x 給消去，這裏的消去也可以用 knock off 喔。造個句子就是，“If you knock off x in this equation, you will end up with the final solution.” (如果你把 x 從這個式子給消去的話, 你就會得到最後的答案。)
7. How can we get through this (situation)? 我們要如何度過這個(難關)呢?
講到度過某個困難的時刻，或許你的直覺反應是要用 pass 或是 overcome。但是另外還有一個你想不太到的說法：get through 或是 pass through。例如有一次我搭一個老美的車因超速被警察攔下來，他就很緊張地說，“How can we get through this?” (結果最後他還是無助地被警察伯伯開了一張罰張。)或是當有人遭逢不幸，我就會安慰人家說，“No matter what’s going to happen, we will get through this hard time together.”(不管再來會發生什麼事, 我們都要一起過度難關。)
注意一下如果是要講的是你已經遭遇過的事情，則過去式 got through 和完成式 have been through 同樣好用。 例如期末考好不容易結束了，你可以鬆口氣說， “I’m so glad I got through finals week.” (我很高興終於考完了。) “I’m so glad I have been through finals week.”(強調“已經”考完了。)
8. We have to work this problem out by tomorrow. 我們必須在明天之前解決這個問題。
講到 work out 這個動詞片語，它在英文裏的用法可是千變萬化的。首先例如解決問題，老美除了說 solve 之外，也超愛用 work out 的，所以解決一個問題你不但可以說 solve a problem，還可以說 work a problem out。不過有時候還要看看上下文的意思，如果我說， “Let’s work out some plans for the holiday.” 這裏的 work out 翻成解決當然不太恰當，所以你可以把它翻成“作出來”。整句的意思就是，“讓我們爲假期擬定一些計劃。
其實 work out 不單單可以代表“解決”(solve)的意思，或是“作出來”的意思。它還可以代表“成功”(succeed)。例如你寫了一個程式，但你不知道能不能成功地執行，你就可以說，“I don’t know if this program is gonna work out.” (我不知道這個程式會不會成功。) 或是男女朋友交往，但你覺得你們倆個人不可能有結果，這句話就是，“I don’t feel this relationship is gonna work out.”
當然啦，許多人都知道 work out 還可以代表運動 (exercise)的意思。(通常是指在健身房所作的運動)所以從這裏不難看出老美其實很喜歡用一些很簡單的單字，如 work out 就可以用來替換比較難的 solve 或是 succeed。也算是美國口語上的一種趨勢吧!
9. I have to work on your name. 我必須練習(發出)你的名字。
講到這個趨勢， 那我再考考大家知不知道 practice (練習)這個字可以用什麼字來代替?想到了沒?答案是用 work 就可以代替 practice 喔! (通常 work 之後會再加上介係詞 on，成爲 work on something)像是有一個老美問我叫什麼名字，我告訴他我叫 “Kun-Lin”結果他發了兩次都發不對，自己就笑了笑說，“Sorry, I have to work on this one”其實他想說的就是，“Sorry, I have to practice this one.”(很抱歉我必須練習一下。)的意思啦!
跟 work out 一樣，work on 用在不同的地方就有不同的意思。像是你去餐廳服務生要收盤子時就會問，“Are you finished or still working on it?”(你吃完了嗎?還是要繼續用?)所以在這裏 work on 可以當“吃”解釋。但是如果你到醫院去，聽到有人說，“The doctor is still working on his patient.” (醫生還在醫治他的病人)。 Work on 在這裏又成了治療 (heal) 的意思。(這個 work on 在這裏如果翻成“吃”就太可怕了吧!)但是我想告訴大家，雖然 work out 和 work on 在不同的場合有不同的解釋，但大家不必去死記每一種的解釋，只要看一下上下文，通常他們的意思都很明顯。
10. I really need to kick back during the holiday season. 我假期時真的需要好好放鬆一下。
最後講到 relax 這個字，relax 在口語中可以代換成 kick back。聽來是不是有點奇怪呢?但這真的是蠻流行的講法。例如我在廣播上常聽到，“Kick off your shoes and kick back for a while.”(脫掉你的鞋子，好好地放鬆一下自己。)
Kick back 這個片語還有許多其它的意思，但都跟字面上的意思“踢回去”有關。例如報復 (revenge)。“The United States decided to kick back after the incident”(事件發生後，美國決定要報復。)或是像拿回扣也是用 kick back 喔， 例如， “The company had to kick back a lot to the corrupt officer.”(這家公司必須給腐敗的政府官員很大一筆佣金)
