Ok, right then, well the person I’d like to talk to you about is a very good friend of mine called Matthew, the reason being that he must be one of the nicest and most polite people I know, which I’ll come to explain in a moment.
But firstly, as for how I know him, well we’ve basically known each other since middle school, because we were in the same class together, and we still see quite a lot of each other. You know, if I feel like going out and doing something, I normally give him a call and see if he’s free to meet up.
And moving on to why I think he’s so polite, well it’s basically because he’s just got really good manners. And just to give you an example, he always says thank you to people, even for the slightest thing. For instance,I’ve noticed that whenever we’re eating at a restaurant, he will thank the waiters and waitresses every time they bring a dish to the table. And another example would be that whenever he gets off a bus, he will always say thank you to the driver, which a lot of people probably think isn’t necessary, but I’m sure the bus drivers really appreciate it, as do the waiters and waitresses, because it’s not all that often they hear people thanking them!
So yeah, that’s basically why I’d say he’s such a polite person, and I’m just trying to think if there’s anything more to add, um……, oh yeah, and one other thing to mention would be that he’s always very complimentary to people. So what I mean is that he tends to always say nice things to people, for example he might make a comment about how nice someone’s looking, or how good their cooking is, which I know might be seen as being a bit um,…what’s the word……um… insincere, but I think he genuinely means what he says, at least most of the time anyway!
And I mean, I can’t remember a single time when he’s ever been rude or unpleasant to anyone, and I also can’t really imagine him being nasty to anyone either.

Well, the most courteous man I know is my uncle, who’s my father’s little brother. We are pretty close. He’s only 10 years older than me and we always hang out together. He’s well educated, I mean, he just got his doctoral degree. He’s been to a bunch of formal occasions, and he’s quite familiar with social etiquette.
Here are some few examples:
Whenever he’s out with someone, he’s always properly dressed. I didn’t get why he would go through so much trouble to “impress” others, but he explained, the whole point was not to impress, but to show respect.
And he’s super modest when talking to others. Besides, he’s a good listener. He never cuts others off. It always feels good when I have a conversation with him.
And he’s extremely polite when interacting with waiters and taxi drivers. He would say thank you many times after he’s been helped.
On top of that, he pays attention to small details in our daily life, like knocking on doors before entering a room, holding the door for others behind him, and holding the elevator when he sees someone rushing to the door.
So you see, he’s really a nice person, and he’s a good influence on me. Spending time with him has helped me become a better person.

This is an interesting question. I know a bunch of people who have really good top of my list though, is this guy I met in high school. What was his Chris. That’s right. As someone who had been struggling with English speaking, I must say that’s very impressive. You know how intimidating those conversations can be. Well actually you wouldn’t know because English is your mother language. But anyone in China with the experience of learning English as a second language knows how difficult it is to create an environment in which Chinese students feel comfortable speaking.
He did it with his politeness and the respect he showed to every student, whether they were good at English or not. He was very successful in making us feel confident around him. For example, what he usually do is he would see you coming from a mile away and start waving his hand, walk towards you and raise his tone of voice to suggest that he was pleased to see you. No one thought he was acting either, because he wasn’t faking his passion for his students. Another thing that he used to do during conversations is that he would lean forward just a little to pay attention while you talk and he would nod his headonce in a while to show that he understood what you said.
I think being polite is all about showing respect, and Chris is an exemplar in showing respect to people who might otherwise feel dwarfed by his presence. I couldn’t have possibly covered all his polite behaviors but those are the two things that I have noticed.
