點滴英語天天學第8課:acquaintance(4)

在今天的課堂上，我們要來學習的內容是與Acquaintance相關的一個Idiom。如果您要表示that you know（所瞭解的，所認識的），您就可以用到這個Idiom：of one’s acquaintance。我們通過下面的例句來看看如何運用它。

e.g. No one else of my acquaintance was as rich or successful. 我認識的人當中，沒有一個人如此富有或者成功。

e.g. Most medical men of his acquaintance, like the majority of people nowadays, lived right up to their incomes. 他所認識的大多數醫生，就象現代大多數人一樣過着收支相抵的生活。

在Example-1中，no one else of my acquaintance中的no one else的意思是“沒有其他人”，of my acquaintance的意思是“我所認識的”，no one else of my acquaintance的意思即爲：我所認識的人當中沒有其他人。

在Example-2中，most medical men of his acquaintance中的most medical men的意思是“大多數醫生”，of his acquaintance的意思是“他所認識的”，most medical men of his acquaintance的意思即爲：他所認識的大多數醫生。

What is more，there are some treasures we can pick up。The first one is：表示數量名詞短語the majority of，意思是“……中的大多數”。例如： The majority of sex offenders have a low opinion of themselves.（大多數性犯罪者都瞧不起自己。）

The second one is：live up to something，意思是“達到……”或“不辜負”。例如： live up to the high standard of the school（達到這所學校的高標準要求），live up to its name （不負盛名，名副其實）。live up to what others expected of her（不辜負別人對她的期望），那麼例句中的live up to their incomes是指“過着收支相抵的生活”。
