Although Chen Yaozi was a civil official in Song Dynasty, he loved archery very much, and was pretty good at it.

宋朝大臣陳堯諮雖然是進士出身，卻愛好射箭，而且技藝不俗。

One day he was practicing in his own field, and eight or nine times out of ten he hit the target. He became quite complacent.

一天，他在自家的場地上演習，中靶率高達百分之八九十，心中大爲得意。

Looking around, he found an old man who sells oil standing nearby. And the old man only nodded slightly towards his skills, not amazed. Angered by this, he called the old man to come over and asked him, “Do you also know archery? Aren’t my skills brilliant?” The old man took out a gourd from the wicker-basket and placed it on the ground. He covered the opening of the gourd with a copper coin. And then he scooped a spoon of oil and began to pour the oil into the gourd through the hole in the coin drop by drop without wetting the coin.

四周一看，發現旁邊站了很久的一位賣油的老頭對此只是微微點點頭，並不特別驚訝，頓時無名火起，將老頭叫過來，問道：“你也懂射箭嗎?我的技術難道不高明嗎?”老頭從筐裏取出一隻葫蘆，放在地上，用一枚銅錢蓋住葫蘆口，舀出一勺油，通過錢眼，一滴一滴倒進葫蘆裏，銅錢上一星油跡也沒有。

The old man said to Chen Yaozi, “This is only practice makes perfect, nothing so brilliant.” Chen Yaozi laughed and sent him away.

老頭對陳堯說：“我這不過是熟能生巧，談不上什麼高明。”陳堯諮笑笑，將老頭打發走了。

　　世外桃源

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there was an old fisherman in Wuling. One day, he took his boat out to go fishing. As the boat floated downstream, the fisherman lost his way. Suddenly, a beautiful forest of peach trees with flowers in full bloom caught his eyes. He carried on sailing to the end of the forest where he found a mountain with a small cave at its foot. After the fisherman walked through the cave, a new world opened up before him. The people seemed happy and gentle, and lived peaceful lives with no arguments or disputes. 東晉年間，武陵有一個老漁夫。一天，他駕着漁船出去打魚。船沿着溪水行駛，老漁夫不知怎麼迷了路。忽然，一片美麗的桃花林出現在他眼前。漁夫覺得很奇怪，繼續往前尋找桃花林的盡頭。樹林的盡頭是一座山，山腳下有個小洞。漁夫穿過了山洞，竟然看到了另外一個世界。

outside the cave, there was no conflict or turbulence. When they saw the fisherman, the people asked him not to tell others what he had seen there.

那裏的人們過着幸福安寧的生活，大家和睦相處，沒有紛爭，老人們安靜地休息，兒童愉快地玩耍，沒有外界那樣動盪不安。大家看見了老漁夫，囑咐他不要把在那兒看到的一切告訴別人。

But when he got home the fisherman told the other villagers about his experiences. They did not really believe him but followed him back to the cave out of curiosity. But he never found the place again.

漁夫回到了家，把整件事告訴了村莊裏的人。大家都不相信，於是跟着他去看看到底有沒有這個地方。可是，這次去他們再也找不到桃花林盡頭的這個世界了。

A peasant in the state of Song led an extremely hard life for he was destitute, depending on worn sackcloth to defense the chill of winter.

宋國的一個農民，因家境貧寒，生活極爲清苦，全靠一件爛麻衣抵禦冬天的嚴寒。

After the spring arrived, the peasant ploughed in the field. When he got tired and rested on the ridge of the field he felt the sunshine to be warmer and more comfortable than the worn sackcloth.

春天來後，農夫在田裏耕地，累了坐在田頭休息時，覺得太陽暖融融的，舒服而愜意，遠比爛麻衣溫暖。

He knew neither spacious nor comfortable houses to live in, nor silk, cotton and fur clothes to keep warm. He was very excited at his discovery, and he said to his wife, “Sun bath is so pleasant, but people do not know it. I will present this secret to the king, and he is sure to bestow many presents to me to reward my loyalty.”

這農民不知道人間寬敞舒適的房子都可居住，也不清楚綿綢和皮衣可以保暖。農民爲自己的這一新發現激動不已，興奮地對妻子說：“曬太陽是如此令人愉快，而人們卻還不知道。我要把這一祕密獻給國王，國王爲了表彰我的忠誠，一定會給我很多賞賜物品。“
