關注社會:聯合國設定首個"國際寡婦日"

2011年6月23日是第一個國際寡婦日。聯合國舉行寡婦日紀念活動，旨在提供一個機會，使人們特別認識到寡婦及其子女的困境，並通過賦予寡婦權利來確保她們的人權和減輕貧困。我們來看看聯合國祕書長潘基文在致辭中是怎麼說的吧。

This first International Widows' Dayis an occasion to call attention to the many "firsts" that women must face when their husbands die. In addition to coping with grief, they may find themselves for the first time since marriage without any social safety net. Far too often, widows lack access to inheritance, land tenure, employment and even the means to survive.

今年是第一次開展國際寡婦日活動，在這個日子裏，我們呼籲人們關注婦女在丈夫死亡後必須“第一次”面對的許多問題。婦女不僅陷入悲痛，而且還可能在結婚後第一次發現她們沒有任何社會安全網。寡婦往往不能繼承財產，沒有土地保有權，不能就業，甚至沒有生存的手段。上文中提到了一些婦女在丈夫死亡後會面臨的問題，比如：grief（悲痛）、without any social safety net（沒有社會安全網）、lack access to inheritance, land tenure（無法繼承財產、沒有土地保有權）等等。她們可能會面臨的其他問題有：poverty（貧困）、bear the heavy burden of caring for their children（承擔撫養孩子的重任）、universally recognized rights denied（普遍公認的權利被剝奪）等等。

Widow這個詞可以用做動詞和名詞兩種形式，名詞形式的用法就是我們這裏用到的International Widows' Day或者She is a widow。而如果是妻子去世留下丈夫一個人，他就是widower（鰥夫）。Widow用做動詞的時候表示“使（某人）成爲寡婦（或鰥夫）”，例如：Martha was widowed3 years ago when her husband was killed in a car accident. （瑪莎的丈夫三年前出車禍去世，留下她一人守寡。）
