今天我們要講由shoot這個詞發展而成的習慣用語。大家知道shoot通常解釋爲“射擊”，但是它在習慣用語裏表達的意思可不同。

我們要學的第一個習慣用語是shoot down。Shoot down的本意是“擊落、消滅敵機”。但是人們日常把這個習慣用語應用在和飛機無關的地方。例如下面這段話說的是紐約一個企業界人士想要在香港開設辦公室。我們來看看他的主意有什麼下場，體會一下其中shooting down意思是什麼。

例句-1：At the meeting this morning they didn't waste time shooting down my idea. They decided the cost of opening the offices was too high and the chances of making a real profit too small.

早上參加會議的人認爲開設那個辦事處的費用太高，而贏利的機會又太小。於是他們毫不遲疑地否決我開設那個辦事處的主意。

所以shoot down在這兒表示放棄或者否定某種想法或者方案。

我們要學的第二個習慣用語是: shoot for。Shoot for這個習慣用語可能來自遊藝場上射擊得獎品的遊戲。你瞄準某一目標開槍，是爲了得到特定的獎品。於是 shoot for 就被用來表示試圖達到某一目的或者取得某種結果。我們來看下面的例子。這段話在說美國國會在定期休會前的情形。

例句-2：Congress is rushing to finish work on new laws. They're shooting for adjournment in two weeks so all the members can hurry home and start campaigning for the election.

國會目前正趕着完成新立法的制定。他們的目標是在兩星期後休會，以使所有的議員都能趕回家鄉去開展競選活動。

這裏的shoot for意思是試圖達到某一目標或者取得某種結果。

我們還要學一個習慣用語: Shoot one's wad。Wad在這兒的意思是下大賭注的人身邊常帶的厚厚的一疊鈔票。Shoot one's wad就是把那一大疊錢通通押作一場賭局的賭注。現在人們把這個習慣用語廣泛地應用在賭局以外的其它方面。

例句-3：Larry shot his wad on his new car. He got the biggest model with all the extras he could think of, like leather seats and sun roof. Now he rarely has enough money to buy lunch.

拉里傾其所有買了一輛新車，並且爲那車配備了他所能想到的所有配件，像皮座椅、天窗等。現在他幾乎沒錢買午飯了。

可見Larry幾乎把全部家底都花在這輛車上了。所以這兒shot his wad意思就是竭盡全部財力。

我們再學一個意義相近的習慣用語: shoot the works。Shoot the works意思類似於shoot one's wad，也是竭盡全力。我們來看個例子。一名汽車製造商要介紹一項新產品。他對屬下人員說要竭盡全力地爲這種新型汽車作廣告宣傳。

例句-4：This time we'll shoot the works. I want the best agency we can find no matter what they cost. And all the ad time on TV and radio they recommend: again, let's shoot the works!

這次我們可得不惜一切代價。不論費用多高我都要儘可能找最好的廣告機構，也要買下他們推薦的所有的電視和廣播時段。再說一遍，讓我們竭盡全力。

找最好的廣告商，買下電視和廣播黃金時段，不用說得花很多費用，所以shoot the works意思就是爲了成功或者達到更高的目標而不惜代價、竭盡全力。
