表達否定的常見翻譯方式

but 類
① but for+名詞和but that+從句，譯爲“要不是，如果沒有”
But for the rain we should have had a pleasant journey.
要不是下雨,我們會有一次愉快的旅行。(記得要用虛擬語氣~)
But for your help, I should have failed./ But that you help me, I should have failed.
要不是你幫助，我就會失敗。
②Anything but
Anything 等複合代詞或複合副詞加but，通常表否定之意。
I will be anything but quiet on Saturday night!
星期六的晚上我根本靜不下心來！
from和of類
①far from 遠非，非但
Far from being relaxed, we both felt so uncomfortable we hardly spoke.
我們兩人非但沒有放鬆，反而都感覺很不自在，幾乎沒有說話。
②so far from 非但不…反而
So far from admitting his own mistake, he falsely accused his critic.
他非但不認錯, 還倒打一耙。
③so far be it from me 我決不願…
Far be it from me to betray a friendship I hold so sacred.
我決不願欺騙我認爲神聖的友誼。
④instead of
Instead of complaining about what's wrong, be grateful for what's right.
別抱怨不好的事，要對好的事心存感恩。
⑤free from 沒有…的，不受…影響的
He is free from prejudice to everybody.
他對所有的人都不帶有任何成見。
介詞
一些介詞表抽象概念時，也可譯爲否定。
①Above,表能力品質超出某種範圍
②Below /beneath：與…不相稱，不值得
③Beyond：表示不可能；爲…所不及
④Under：未達到，未滿足
⑤Within：不超過，不出
He's above suspicion (= He is completely trusted).
他無可置疑。
He considers such jobs beneath him.
他覺得這種工作有失他的身份。(即”和他的身份不相稱”)
The situation is beyond our control.
我們已無法控制這一局面。
Nobody under 18 is allowed to buy alcohol.
未滿18歲者不得買酒。
A house within a mile of the station.
離車站不到一英里的一所房子。
the last 最不…的
He would be the last person who would do such a thing.
他最不可能幹這種事情。
以上我們總結了一些形式上肯定但意思上否定的表達，但英語中還有一類詞，雖然形式上是否定的，在意義上卻是肯定的，比如以下句子：
We cannot too strongly urge upon you the importance of this matter.
對此事，我們無論怎樣向你強調其重要性都不會過分。
(cannot …too/can never…too/can hardly…too通常譯爲“再…也不爲過”) ：這一結構的實質是：過分否定，導致肯定。因而此結構中的can’t可改用impossible，not可採用其變體never、hardly等，因此上句也可改寫爲：We are impossible too strongly urge upon you the importance of this matter.
I can never thank you enough for your generosity.
對您的慷慨大度我永遠感謝不盡。
(can never do enugh也有“在…也不爲過”的意思)
can’t help doing 表示“禁不住做某事”時，也可看作是“形否意肯”。
I can't help feeling sorry for the poor man.
我不禁爲這個可憐的男人感到難過。
此外，還有can’t help but… 意爲“必須，只好”。
When our country calls us for help, we can't help but go.
當祖國需要我們時, 我們必須盡力。
“ no/none/nothing + but/like”意爲“只有”、“只”、“不過”等。“ nothing short of有“簡直可以說”的意思。
例如：
The results are nothing short of magnificent.
結果非常不錯。
All that money brought nothing but sadness and misery and tragedy.
那筆錢帶來的只有傷心、痛苦和悲劇。
There is nothing like jogging as a means of exercise.
鍛鍊身體的最好辦法是慢跑。
None but God will ever know what I suffered.
只有上帝知道我受過什麼苦。
no+adj.／adv.的比較級+than表示“兩個都不”（詳見“形容詞”部分）
否定詞或暗含否定的詞+until／till表“直到…才”
Britain did not introduce compulsory primary education until 1880.
直到1880年，英國纔開始實行初等義務教育。
no sooner than/hardly／scarcely⋯when／before表示“一…就”
No sooner had I heard the knock than I opened the door.
當我聽到敲門聲,我馬上就開門了。
Hardly had we started when it began to rain.
我們剛出發，就開始下雨了。
We had hardly started before [ when ] it began to rain.
我們剛出發，就開始下雨。
以上我們談了部分否定和全部否定，雙重否定和否定轉移，以及一些特殊的”形肯意否”和”形否意肯”的表達，這些大概就是否定句翻譯時的難點所在了，我們在翻譯實踐過程中，不僅要注重積累，更要注意用英語思維方式去理解英語，既要兼顧英語句子的語法功能，準確理解句子在特定語境中的內涵，也要考慮到漢語句子的結構與語序，依照漢語的表達習慣來組織行文，通過對英漢兩種語言的比較與認知，來逐步提高自己的翻譯水平。
