18. COME OUT SWINGING

互相攻擊

to be confrontational and strongly defend yourself at the beginning of a debate

剛開始辯論時,很具對抗性並且很激烈的捍衛自己。

例:Our local MP came out swinging against the current leadership and demanded that the government resign.

我們當地的國會議員開始攻擊現在的領導階層並且要求政府辭職。

耐心的等下去

例:I know you'd really like to call him, but I don't think that’s the right thing to do now. Just hang in there and he will call you.

我知道你現在很想給他打電話,但是我覺得現在並不是一個好時機。耐心一點,他會打電話過來的。

to make a special effort/try very hard to achieve your goal

例:If you want to become proficient in English, you'll have to go the extra mile and start learning idioms.

如果你想要精通英文,你必須加倍努力並且得開始學習習語。

My English class was great, we learnt so much because our teacher was the best, she always went the extra mile for us.

我的英語課之所以很棒,能學到很多知識,是因爲我們的老師很好,她總是爲我們付出更多的努力。

22. RUNNING ON FUMES

to continue to stay awake when feeling exhausted

例:I'm sorry, but I've got to go home now. I haven't slept for twenty hours and I'm running on fumes.

to snitch on someone, or let their secret out

例:I asked you to keep it to yourself! I can't believe you sold me out, I trusted you!

24. YOU SOLD ME (ON SOMETHING)

認爲某事是值得的、真的

you convinced me of something, because you were persuasive

你讓我信服某事,因爲你有說服力。

例:OK, you've sold me. I'll go to the match with you.

好的,你說服我了,我和你一起去比賽。

25. BLEW ME AWAY

使某人震撼

when something blows you away, you're extremely impressed by it

如果你對某事很震撼,你對他的印象很深。

例:The exhibition just blew me away. I'd never seen so many beautiful paintings before.

26. BLOW SMOKE

說空話蒙人

to exaggerate or say things that aren’t true to make you seem better/ more knowledgeable than in reality

例:I'm not blowing smoke. I have honestly read War and Peace by Tolstoy.

to call for help when you don't need it

不需要幫助的時候尋求幫助

例:Do you think Peter is in trouble or is he just crying wolf?

你認爲彼得是真的是有困難呢,還是在開玩笑呢?

28. COULDN’T CARE LESS

滿不在乎

used to express total lack of interest in something

用來表示對某事缺乏興趣

例:That man stole a bottle of wine from the shop.
Oh, really? I couldn't care less.

那個男人從商店裏偷來一瓶酒。
真的嗎?那又怎麼樣?

29. BE CHUFFED TO BITS

超級開心

to be pleased and happy

開心、快樂

例:Hey, thanks for the present! I'm chuffed to bits.

太感謝你的禮物啦,我太開心啦!

30. FEELING UNDER THE WEATHER

不舒服

to be ill or unable to do regular activities

生病了或者不能做常規的事

例:I think I'm going to have to take the day off work. I feel quite under the weather today.

我想我得請一天假。我今天不太舒服。

31. BE TICKLED PINK

非常高興,樂壞了

to be excited and happy

激動、高興

例:She was tickled pink by all the compliments she'd received.

聽到了讚美,她高興壞了。
