The Roman poet Virgil says, “The god delights in an odd number.” In Shakespeare’s play Merry Wives of Windsor, Falstaff says, “Good luck lies in odd say, there is divinity in odd numbers, either in nativity, chance, or death.” No doubt the odd numbers 1,3, 5, 7, 9 play a far more important part than the even numbers.

奇數 古羅馬詩人維吉爾曾說：“神喜歡奇數。”在莎士比亞《溫莎的風流婦人》裏，福爾摩斯塔夫說：“碰上單數會有好運氣……據說單數是神聖的，無論是出生、機緣還是死亡，都跟單數有關。”奇數1，3，5，7，9起的作用似乎總大於偶數。

題外話：中國人有崇偶心理，但似乎不應誇大。對6與8的特別崇拜，以及對4的嫌棄都是後起的，根基很淺。在中國傳統文化裏，從1到10，沒有一個數字不神祕。
