A fatal tale of drowning in Beijing has caused a surge in the sale of survival tools online, as many residents feared a repeat of the weekend's downpour.

Ding Zhijian, a 34-year old magazine editor, became trapped in his car on Saturday during Beijing's heavy storms, according to local media. The water pressure prevented Mr. Ding from opening his door and his vehicle windows refused to open, according to the account. He drowned before he was rescued.

With predicted rain storms approaching Beijing over the next 10 days, residents are preparing for the worst. Many discussions sprang up on Sina Corp.'s Weibo microblogging service tackling the issue of how to escape a submerged car if the car window doesn't work.

The U.S.-made ResQMe a rescue tool carried on a keychain and designed to smash auto glass and cut through seatbelts has become the second most searched item under Taobao's outdoor goods category, receiving more than 12,477 hits. One Taobao-hosted online store promising to deliver within the month of August has presold around 1,700 key chains in the past few days, including more than 570 in the past 24 hours.

Some residents have turned to a cheaper alternative, the traditional hammer, as the must-have survival tool. One store, which boasts it hammers are the underwater survival must-have tool,÷ has sold over 500 in the past three days.

Other popular categories dominating Taobao searches in the wake of the flood include escape tools, axes and army knives.

No everyone is looking to gear up as some have taken in interest in a piece of survival equipment every car comes equipped with the headrest.

A Japanese video demonstrating how to use the headrest to escape a vehicle when it's trapped in water has gone viral in China, gathering more than 2.5 million views on Chinese video site Youku in the space of a day. The video demonstrates that by applying pressure with the metal ends of the headrest to the bottom corners of the car window, the glass will break easily.

A popular post on Weibo by Wong Yujing, a policeman based in Zhejiang province who has more than 750,000 followers, made a similar suggestion, though some others on the site raised doubts. One user wrote that headrests are not made for smashing windows, linking to an article published by the Beijing Morning Post that quoted a car manufacturer stating that headrests are designed for the sole purpose of support. (We haven't had time to test this approach in China Real Time's lab facilities, so we can't vouch for its efficacy.)
