在整個世界盃期間，我們經常能聽到法國被稱爲高盧雄雞，出現頻率極高，法國和雄雞有什麼關係呢？

高盧是法國古稱，高盧雄雞是法國第一共和國時代國旗上的標誌，是當時法國人民的革命意識的象徵。羅馬帝國把現在的法國叫做高盧(Gallia)， 把高盧人叫做Gallus，而Gallus在拉丁語裏的另一個意思是雄雞。

A common and traditional symbol of the French people is the Gallic rooster. Its origins date back to Antiquity, since the Latin word Gallus meant both "rooster" and "inhabitant of Gaul".

但直到文藝復興時期雄雞才正式成爲法國的象徵。在法國大革命和七月王朝時期，雄雞取代了王權的標誌---百合花。

從二十世紀八十年代起，高盧雄雞被當作法國足球隊和橄欖球隊的標誌，由此使得高盧雄雞舉世聞名。無論是王室還是革命者，都將高盧雄雞當作是法國的不二象徵，高盧雄雞的形象經常出現於郵票與硬幣上。
