besides是作“除此之外”講，是肯定的意思，相當於as well as或in addition to的用法；except則是作“除了”講，是否定的意思，相當於butnot或leaving out的用法。例如：
Besides half bottle of whisky，he drank three gins andsome beer．除了半瓶威士忌之外，他還喝了 3杯杜松子酒和一些啤酒。（3種酒都喝了）
I like all drinks except whisky．除了威士忌，我什麼酒都喜歡喝。（彷彿說“I don''t like whisky．”）
All of the blackguards have kept out of the way besides that one．連這個在內，所有的壞蛋都已斂跡了。（包括那一個在內）
All of the blackguards have kept out of the way except thatone．除了那一個以外，所有的壞蛋都已斂跡了。（不包括那一個在內）
如果是用於疑問和否定兩種結構，兩者可以通用。試舉例來說明，例如：
The old man has nothing to live besides/except his pen-sion．除了養老金之外，這位老年人別無生活來源。（用於否定句，兩者都可以通用，都作“不包括在內”講）。

注意：
There was another one besides me．除我之外另有一人。（是兩人，所以不能說…no one besides me，也不能說…another one except me）
There was no one except me．除了我，別無他人。（是一人，所以不能說…another one except me，也不能說…no one besides me）
