Good looks or a sense of humour are increasingly taking a back seat to money when it comes to the criteria women use to find a partner, according to new research in Germany.

The Cologne-based Institute for the German Economy said more and more women now had good jobs and were not prepared to select a partner that could not match them in spending power.

The report on couples between 1998 and 2008 found women increasingly having well paid jobs, and wanting a partner who earns similar to avoid stress and confrontation.

As a result in the 10 years between 1998 and 2008 the number of couples with unequal incomes had decreased.

The number of couples of two average or high earners increased from 27.9 to 30.5 per cent.

And the number of couples that included a high earner and a low earner in the relationship decreased by 2.8 per cent from 28.6 to 25.8 per cent in the same time span.

At the same time the inequality of net incomes, that means that the gap between rich and poor couples, has risen by 15 per cent in Germany between 1998 and 2008.
