Lunch in China is a big deal. It remains a part of Chinese culture that, when I’m back home in England, I constantly admire and miss forever.

At home, at work, at school, British lunchtime is far from a celebrated part of the day. We seem eager to get it over, with little cooking effort. And in quiet solitude(獨處). Work canteens are packed with people “too busy” to eat, rushing to the checkout with something in hand that they can quickly consume on the way to another meeting. The world of work in Britain leaves little time to consume our meals. Let alone enjoy them Perhaps this is why so many of us harbor such unhealthy relationship with food.

The way we structure our days in England is representative of our carelessness towards mealtimes. Meetings, lectures, interviews, are all scheduled over the hours of twelve till two. In Beijing lunch is early, usually at eleven-thirty, and it lasts until one. And those who can’t afford to shut up shops or offices for an hour still gather in small groups to share a meal, in a way that is rarely seen in England. Never have I been absorbed in a culture where such emphasis is pressed on carving out time to eat, and I adore, it.

In China workers or students eat together. Food is shared and the time is enjoyed as a moment of reunion within busy lives. This is a value and practice we should hold more dearly in our lives in Britain. In China food is more than a necessity, but rather a time for re-connection with friends and family.

28. What could mainly explain ignorance of lunchtime in England?

A. Lack of good cooks. B. Busy schedule.

C. Desire for work. D. Careless attitude.

29. Which does the author appreciate most about Chinese lunch?

A. The variety of lunch food.

B. The practice of sharing food.

C. The average length of lunch time.

D. The moment of enjoying lunch together.

30. How does the author develop the passage?

A. By giving examples.

B. By making comparisons.

C. By analyzing reasons.

D. By stating arguments.

31. What could be a suitable title for the passage?

A. Lunchtime, a way to learn Chinese culture

B. Lunchtime, a time for re-connection

C. Lunchtime, a representative of UK carelessness

D. Lunchtime, a taste of cultural differences

D.

There are two types of people in this world: those who regularly wash their office coffee cup. And those who only take it off their desk to cover up the coffee mark at the bottom with a fresh pour, driving away their shame with the reasoning that the heat must kill the bacteria or spine thing.

Depending on which type of person you are, this will be either mildly annoying or more-than-mildly exciting. As Heidi Mitchell wrote in a recent Wall Street Journal column, it’s fine to never wash your cup, as long as you’re not sharing it with anybody else.

There are two warnings to that statement, infectious-disease expert Jeffrey Strake, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine, told Mitchell; One, it only applies if you’re not sharing the cup with anybody else. And two , if you leave cream or sugar in your cup over the weekend, that can certainly cause mold(黴) to grow – in which case, wash it out.

Otherwise, though, there’s not really much to worry about. “If I went and cultured the average unwashed coffee cup, of course I would find bacteria.” Starke said. “But remember the vast majority came from the person who used the cup.” Even if you drink from it while sick, it’s pretty hard to re-infect yourself with the same cup; most viruses don’ts live long outside the body, which means that just letting your cup live in its own dirt may be a safer bet than the alternative; cleaning it with the disgusting sponge(海綿) in the office kitchen “Then sponge in the break room probably has the highest bacteria count of anything in the office.” Starke said If the idea of not washing horrifies you , just stick the sponge in the microwave before using. Otherwise, though, reel free to continue your lazy ways without guilt.

32. What does the passage intend to tell us?

A. It is harmful to drink coffee with sugar.

B. The hot water contributes to the bacteria growing.

C. It’s okay not to wash your coffee cup regularly.

D. Drinking from unwashed coffee cups causes diseases casily.

33. What do we know from Stark’s words?

A. The coffee cup in the office must be put in the microwave to clean.

B. It’s easy to get infested if you often use the same unwashed cup.

C. It’s good way to grow bacteria in an unwashed cup

D. The coffee cup shouldn’t be shared in the office.

34. What does the underlined part “your lazy ways” refer to “

A. Leaving your coffee cup unwashed. B. Sticking the sponge in the microwave

C. Using Paper cups only in the office D. Cleaning your coffee cup with sponge.

35. Where does the passage probably come form?

A. A travel brochure. B. A science magazine.

C. An official statement. D. An entertainment program.

I am writing back to tell you about our arrangements for English exchange students. As for accommodation, they are expected to stay in our school dormitories. Also, Chinese meals will be served in students' canteen.

Various activities have been planned for their coming. Firstly, they will be shown around our beautiful campus. Then they can attend classes with Chinese students to see what’s going on in a Chinese classroom. Visiting the Great Wall is included, which should be a good chance to learn about Chinese history. Moreover, a one-day home-stay with a Chinese family will help them have a better understanding of Chinese family life.

Please let us know if anything needs to be adjusted so that we can better our schedule. I hope British students will have a wonderful stay here.
