no dice 起源於20世紀初，當時賭博在美國的許多州是非法的，而骰子是賭博的重要工具，也是警察抓賭的關鍵證據。因此當警察抓賭的時候，賭徒們總是要想盡辦法把骰子藏起來。法院甚至會因爲警察在現場沒有找到骰子而不受理案件，或因證據不足而判賭徒無罪。後來人們就用這個俚語來表示不同意、不可能等否定意思，即：“不行，不可以”。因此，當美國人說"No Dice!"時，他/她要表達的意思就是:"I disapprove you!"、"It is impossible!"、"no way!"。
