Casablanca

Rick: Louis, you've got something on your mind. why don't you spill it?
I wonder who spilled out the information.
*******************************************
Renault: How observant【觀察力敏銳的】you are! As a matter of fact, I want to give you a word of advice.
Rick: Oh yeh. Have some brandy?
Renault: Thank you. Rick, there are many exit visas【簽證】 sold in this cafe. But we know that you've never sold some. That's the reason we permit you to remain open.
Rick: I thought It's because we let you win at the roulette【
Renault: Now, that's another reason. There is a man who's arrived in Casablanca on his way to America. He'd offer a fortune to anyone who furnish him with an exit visa.
*******************************************
furnish sb with sth
I'll furnish you with all you need.
*******************************************
Rick: Well? What man?
Renault: Victor Laszlo.
Rick: Victor Laszlo!
Renault: Rick, that's the first time I've ever seen you so impressed【
Rick: Well, he's succeeded in impressing half the world.
*******************************************
succeed in doing sth.
He succeeded in getting the job.
*******************************************
Renault: It's my duty to see that he doesn't impress the other half. Rick, Laszlo must never reach America. He stays in Casablanca.
Rick: It'll be interesting to see how he manages …
Renault: Manage what?
Rick: His escape.
Renault: Oh, but I just told you …
Rick: Stop it! He escaped from a concentration camp and Nazis have been chasing him all over Europe.
He never ceased to chase after his dream in his vigorous youth.
He is good for nothing except chasing girls.
*******************************************
Renault: This is the end of the chase.

Laszlo: Monsieur Blame, I wonder if l could talk to you?
Rick: Go ahead.
Laszlo: Wel1, is there some other place? It's rather confidential【機密的】, what l have to say.
Rick: Come up to my office.
Laszlo: You must know that it's very important I get out of Casablanca.
*******************************************
get out of 離開,逃脫。
Get out of here, leave me alone!
Smoking is a habit she can’t get out of.
*******************************************

Laszlo: But it's my privilege【特權,殊榮】 to be one of the leaders of the great movement. You know what I have been doing. You know what it means to the work, to the lives of thousands and thousands of people that I should be free to reach America and continue my work.
Rick: I'm not interested in politics. The problems of the world are not in my department. I'm a saloon keeper.
如果你跟某人談起某件事,他說“It is not my department”意思是“這不關我事”,”
Don't ask me about our finances, that is my wife's department.
*******************************************
Laszlo: That wasn't always your attitude.
Rick: Wasn't it?
Laszlo: My friends in the underground tell me that you have quite a record. You ran guns to Ethiopia. You fought against the Fascists in Spain.
如:fight against poverty,oppression and ignorance.
*******************************************
Rick: What of it?
Laszlo: Isn't it strange that you always happened to be fighting on the side of the underdog【
*******************************************
on the side of sb
I'm on George's side in this debate.
*******************************************
Rick: Yes, I found that an expensive hobby【愛好,嗜好】, too. But then I never was much of a businessman.
Laszlo: Are you enough of a businessman to appreciate an offer of 100,000 francs?
Rick: I appreciate it but I don't accept it.
Laszlo: I'll raise it to 200,000.
Rick: My friend, you can make it a million francs or three. My answer would still be the same.
Laszlo: There must be some reason why you won't let me have them.
Rick: There is. I suggest that you ask your wife.
Laszlo: I beg your pardon?
Rick: I said, ask your wife.
Laszlo: My wife?
Rick: Yes.

Rick: The names are Mr. and Mrs. Victor Laszlo.
Ilsa: But why my name, Richard?
Rick: Because you're getting on that plane.
Ilsa: But I … I don't understand. What about you?
Rick: I'm staying here with him till the plane gets safely away.
Ilsa: No, Richard, no. What's happened to you? Last night we said …
Rick: Last night we said a great many things. You said I was to do the thinking for both of us. Well, I've done a lot of it since then. It all adds up to one thing. You are getting on that plane with Victor where you belong.
*******************************************
add up to 短語有兩層意思,最基本的意思相當於“amount to” 總計 ;另一層意思爲“意味着” ,句中的“ add up to” 屬於這種用法。
如:These clues don't really add up to very much.
*******************************************
Ilsa: Richard, no, I …
Rick: You've got to listen to me. Have you any idea what you've got to look forward to if you stayed here? Nine chances of ten we both wind up in the concentration camp. Isn't that true, Louis?
I have been looking forward to seeing you again.
I always said he would wind up in jail.
*******************************************
Renault: I'm afraid Major Strasser will insist.
Ilsa: You are saying this only to make me go.
Rick: I'm saying it because it's true. Inside us, we both know you belong【合適,應該】with Victor. You're part of his work, the thing that keeps him going. If that plane leaves the ground and you are not with him, you regret it maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of you life.
Ilsa: What about us?
Rick: We'll always have Paris. We didn't have … We lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night.
Ilsa: And I said I would never leave you.
Rick: And you never will. I got a job to do, too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I got to do you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm not good at being noble. But it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of bean in this crazy world. Someday you understand that. Not now.
*******************************************
be a part of sth 可理解爲“參與某件事”,相當於“be involved in”
如 :You are cheating people for money, I don’t want to be a part of it.
*******************************************
Rick: Here's looking at you, kid.
