mare's nest的淵源，簡單地近乎荒誕──因爲母馬從不築巢穴，所以mare's nest（母馬的巢穴）自然也就不會存在。由此，"mare's nest"常用來比喻“原以爲重要的追求，到頭來來卻空歡喜夢一場”。或許，人們又覺得，不會築巢的母馬既使築巢穴也會搞得一團糟（更爲荒誕的推理），所以，"mare's nest"又可用來指代“雜亂、無序、棘手”的狀況。
