Indeed, for a living being there is no such thing as true silence, for silence itself is arevelation of the mind and the heart, an echo of the soul of a different form.
Some people use silence as a disguise of the emptiness of the head.
Some use it as a means to depict their disorientation and melancholy.
And some use it as a way of expressing their angers and sorrows.

Silence usually is ephemeral. It reminds one of the bronze bells dangling from a pagoda''seaves; on windless days they are a decoration upon the age-weathered beauty, but with windthey give out wonderful tinkling and jingling metallurgic sounds, as if echoing age-old stories oflong, long ago...
Do you not think the same of silent people?
they say that "silence is golden", but of what nature is this "gold"? It can include integrity,honesty and kindness; it can stand for indifference to and detachment from fame andfortune; but it can also act as an excuse for hypocrisy, slyness and cowardice... theglittering of gold may not necessarily be the most brilliant lustre in the world.
Can it be that permanent silence is only represented by death?
Perhaps even death cannot represent true silence, for the carrier of the soul can turn intodust, so that the sincere and wise voices from the bottom of the heart will trigger long-lastingechoes in the seas of human hearts...

其實，對活着的生命而言，真正的沉默是不存在的。沉默本身也是一種思想和心境的流露，是靈魂的另一種形式的回聲。
有的人以沉默掩飾思想的空虛。
有的人以沉默敘述迷茫和惆悵。
有的人以沉默表達內心的憤怒和憂傷。
……
沉默常常是暫時的。就像古塔檐角下的銅鈴，無風時，它們只是一種古色古香的裝飾，一起風，它們便會發出奇妙的金屬音響，似乎是許多古老故事的悠遠的回聲……
沉默的人們不也一樣?
“沉默是金”，是怎樣的一種“金”呢? 這個“金”字中，可以包含正直、善良，可以代表淡泊、超脫，也可以是虛僞、圓滑、怯懦的一種託辭……金子的光澤，未必是世界上最動人的光澤。
是不是隻有死亡纔是永遠的沉默?
也許，死亡也未必是真正的沉默，靈魂的載體可以化爲塵土，那些真誠睿智的心聲，卻會長久地在人心的海洋中引起悠長的回聲……-
1.其實……是靈魂的另一種形式的回聲。
其實：這個詞是承上啓下的。英文裏indeed這個詞起的也是這個作用。人們經常把indeed理解爲“的確”，這個意思只是indeed很多用法裏的一個。這樣的詞在用的時候應當找一本英文的learner''s dictionary認真地翻閱一下。這裏不妨從Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English上摘兩個例句看一看：Did youhear the explosion? Indeed I did. / I didn''t mind. Indeed, I was pleased.前一句裏的indeed是“當然”的意思，用來加重語氣;後一句裏的indeed是“甚至還……”的意思，表示“不但不……，而且還……”。
思想和心境：英文用mind來代表思想，用heart來代表感情。
流露：revelation是“表露”、“揭示”之意。
2.有的人……以沉默表達內心的憤怒和憂傷。
有的人：第一句裏用了some people，第二句和第三句就不用重複了，只用some即可。
3.沉默常常是暫時的。……沉默的人們不也一樣?
常常：初學英文的朋友往往會按照中文的意思來想英文是哪個詞，於是“常常”就是often，“通常”就是usually。而實際上不論是哪個詞，都應當從上下文來確定它的意思，即使如often和usually這樣簡單的詞也應當這樣。這篇文章通篇都在講各種各樣的“沉默”，讓人覺得“沉默”常在，所以這個句子裏“常常”就譯成了usually。
ephemeral/!#fem2r2l/：存在時間很短的，壽命很短的。
就像：可以譯爲It is like...，但說“讓人想起……”可能更符合原文的意思：It reminds one of thebronze bells...。
檐角下的：這裏不能說dangling under...，英語的搭配應當是用dangling from...，意思是“吊在……上”。
古色古香：漢英辭典上給的釋義是of antique flavour等，但這裏我認爲可以根據上下文來譯。“古色古香”在這裏是表示一種年長日久的滄桑美麗，並不是小裏小氣的纖美，於是用了age-weathered這個詞。
金屬音響：如果譯成metallurgic sounds，給人的印象是乾巴巴的金屬碰撞聲，加上tinkling andjingling就使聲音悅耳動聽起來了。
think of：認爲……如何。think the same of...：認爲……相同。
4.“沉默是金”，是怎樣的一種“金”呢?
“沉默是金”：這句話用了引號，表示是人們常說的一句話，於是譯文加上了they say...。這樣也能使句子在語氣上與前面的部分連接得更爲順暢一些。如果直接說silence is golden，就會顯得比較突兀。
怎樣的一種：指的就是這裏所說的金的品質，在英文裏就是nature。
5.這個“金”字中，……也可以是虛僞、圓滑、怯懦的一種託辭……
這個“金”字中：中文不怕重複，而英文卻最怕這個。前面已經用過golden和gold，再用其中哪一個都不合適，所以就用代詞it代替了。
正直、善良：中文是兩個詞，而英文卻用了三個，原因是中文和英文詞的意義範圍不盡相同，中文的“善”字當中，包含有心地善良、願做好事、誠實守信等多重意思，不是一個英文詞所能概括得了的。同樣，很多英文單詞的意義也不是某一箇中文字或詞能完全表達的，翻譯時也得要用幾個詞才能表達得清。
淡泊、超脫：中文裏這幾個詞本身的含義就是不看重名利，所以英文說indifference to anddetachment from fame and fortune。另外要注意一下這裏的搭配：indifference/indifferent + to;detachment/detached + from。底下的excuse則是與for搭配的。
6.金子的光澤，未必是世界上最動人的光澤。
光澤：glittering。
未必是：這裏要譯出原文的語氣，就成了may not necessarily be...。
最動人的光澤：譯爲the most brilliant lustre，“動人的”不用moving或touching，因爲這裏所說的“光澤”是視覺上的，而那兩個詞則是用來形容訴諸情感的東西的(having strong effect on the feelings,causing strong feelings)。
7.是不是隻有死亡纔是永遠的沉默?
Can it be that...?：是不是……的情況?這句話也可以說can it be that only death representspermanent silence?但是這樣話語的重點落不到“只有死亡”上面，不如譯文中的譯法到位。
8.也許，死亡……人心的海洋中引起悠長的回聲……
載體：carrier。
心聲：如果只譯成inner voice，意思不到位，不如說得再具體一點，from the bottom of the heart，能夠更清楚一些。
長久地在……引起回聲：注意一下英文和中文表達方法的不同之處：英文是trigger long-lasting echoesin the seas of human hearts，因爲trigger是瞬間性質的動詞，不可以長時間地trigger，所以把“長久”的意思放到了“回聲”之前。
seas of human hearts：可以理解爲“像海洋那樣多的人們的心中”，或者“人們的心像海洋一樣”。
