經典中國歷史故事閱讀：姜太公釣魚
When King Wen decided to go hunting, Bian, his official historian, burnt a tortoise shell to forecast the result. After reading the cracks he said, "Hunting on the north side of the Wei River is bound to bring a great gain. It will not be a dragon or a Chi(1), nor will it be a tiger or a bear. It will be a wise man sent by Heaven to be your minister and mentor." King Wen got on his carriage, started the horses, and set out for the place. There he saw Jiang taigong sitting on the grass and fishing.
Zhou Xibo went hunting and on the north bank of the wei River he met Jiang Taigong. After talking with him, Xibo was very pleased, saying, "Before he died, my father had anticipated that Zhou would become prosperous when a sage came to us. Are you the sage? My father had long expected your arrival!" So he called him Taigong Wang (Father's Expectation). He returned with Taigong, sharing his carriage with him, and was to treat him as his mentor.
King wen made Taigong the magistrate of Guantan. During the year Taigong was there, there was never a wind that was strong enough to disturb the leaves of the trees. Once in his dream, King Wen saw a beautiful woman weeping before his carriage. When asked the reason, she replied, "I am the daughter of the god of Mount Taishan and married to the god of the East sea. Now I want to go home, but the virtuous magistrate of Guantan makes the trip difficult. For my movements are always accompanied by a violent storm, which damage his good name." After waking up, the king summoned Taigong to ask what had happened. He was told that a violent storm with pouring rain had swept areas outside Guantan that day. King Wen then promoted Taigong to the position of Chief General.
太公姓姜名尚，又名呂尚，是輔佐周文王、周武王滅商的功臣。他在沒有得到文王重用的時候，隱居在陝西渭水邊一個地方。那裏是周族領袖姬昌(即周文王)統治的地區，他希望能引起姬昌對自己的注意，建立功業。
太公常溪旁垂鈴。一般人釣魚，都是用彎鉤，上面接着有香味的餌食，然後把它沉在水裏，誘騙魚兒上鉤。但太公的釣鉤是直的，上面不掛魚餌，也不沉到水裏，並且離水面三尺高。他一邊高高舉起釣竿，一邊自言自語道：“不想活的魚兒呀，你們願意的話，就自己上鉤吧!”
一天，有個打柴的來到溪邊，見太公用不放魚餌的直鉤在水面上釣魚，便對他說：“老先生，像你這樣釣魚，再釣100年也釣不到一條魚的!”
太公舉了舉釣竿，說：“對你說實話吧!‘我不是爲了釣到魚，而是爲了釣到王與侯!”
經典中國歷史故事閱讀：驚弓之鳥
During the time of the Warring States (475-221 BC)， there lived a well-known archer named Geng Ying whose art in shooting was excelled by none at his time.
戰國時期，有個傑出的弓箭手，叫做更贏。他的射箭本領在當時可稱是舉世無雙。
One day, as he was standing by the side of the King of Wei, a flock of swan geese were flying over. With confidence, Geng Ying said to the king, "The twang of my bow-string might bring down a bird." The King doubted much. Just then a solitary swan goose appeared, low and slow in its flight, sad and dolorous in its cry. Instantly Geng Ying bended his bow and forcibly pulled the bowstring. Twang! High up went he shrilling sound into the air and down fell the bird to the ground. The king admired with bewilderment. Gang Ying then explained: "The bird was flying low and slow, because it was already hurt; it was crying in a bitter tone, because it had lost its companions. Due to the fact that it was already hurt and sad at heart, the twang of my strong bow, that birds dreaded most, startled it. The shrilling sound made its heart beat fast, its wings weak, its balance uneven. Thus it fell down just as commonly as a man drops his chop-sticks, at the thunder-stroke, at a dinner table."
有一天，他和魏王並肩站着，天空中忽然飛過一羣鴻雁。更贏很自信的對魏王說："我可以用弓聲就把飛鳥給打下來。"魏王很懷疑。正在那是，一隻孤雁很低很慢的飛過。鳴聲悽慘。更贏見了，就張着弓，扣着弦，砰的一聲，直入雲宵。那孤雁果然應聲落地。魏王驚歎之餘，不明白這是怎麼回事。更贏解釋說："那孤雁飛得低且慢，因爲它已經受過傷;它鳴叫的聲音悲而哀，因爲它離了羣。身傷心碎，使它心跳加速，兩翼無力，體重失去平衡，正如人們吃飯時，突然聽見雷聲，筷子落地的情況一樣自然而平常。
Henceforth comes the idiom "A bird startled by the mere twang of a bow-string", illustrating a case where a man who had been previously and repeatedly frightened became numb and stupefied by a new thing of the same nature not knowing how to face the new situation.
後人根據上面的故事，做成了 "驚弓之鳥"這個成語，形容先前多次受過驚嚇的人，忽然遇到同樣可怕的事物，就嚇得魂飛魄散，驚惶失措，不知如何去應付新的環境。
