After a quiz last autumn, Kuang crossed the continent eastward to Toronto to visit his schoolmate, the distance measuring approximately 5,000 kilometers,

His train started from Vancouver, a city surrounded by mountains. After confirming his baggage was aboard the train, Kuang settled down in his seat. Having a gift for communication, he started chatting with another passenger within 5 minutes. Their topics included the Canadian traditions, the Prime Minister, the mixture of races, and the terrifying Great Fall. After a nice buffet at noon, he was pleased to find that the scenery was impressive. He saw beautiful harbours in the distance, wealthy urban areas and maple forest that covered thousands of acres. He even managed to catch sight of an eagle flying upward over bushes.

Kuang reached Toronto which lies slightly near the border at a misty dawn. There was frost and the broad downtown streets were very quiet. Though it was early, Kuang phoned his schoolmate in a booth nearby at once rather than waiting for him to come. They had a good time together.

About two months ago, it has been announced that this year’s winner of Nobel Prize in literature was Alice Munro, she is from Canada, and she is famous for her short stories. Alice Munro’s winning for Nobel Prize gives her great reputation, but at the same time, people start to be more interesting in Canadian literature.

When we talk about world literature, the first thing comes out in our mind is British literature, then the American literature. They are the main literature in the world; the winner of Nobel Prize in literature often belongs to them. However, as the world gets globalized, the winner is no longer limited in British and America, India and China begin to join the winner club. At this time, the club has more members, Canada also joins in.

Canadian literature is famous for short story, Alice Munro, Magaret Atwood, Magaret Launce and so on are the outstanding short story writers. The main character of their writing is that the readers understand the novel easily, but the novel is not that simple, the theme is impressing and profound. Alice Munro is skilled at describing the characters’ mind and their struggle. That is the reason why she wins the Nobel Prize.

It is true that Canadian literature is on the processing of rising, we can hear of many outstanding writers, their short story is excellent and will not spend too much time to read. In all, Canadian short story is worth to reading.

Fluency in Chinese may mean more opportunities in Canada as more parents, students and educators recognize China's emergence, and their interest in studying the Chinese language increased.

The mushrooming of interest is not only among Chinese Canadians, but people with differentethnic backgrounds, said language experts.

In Hamilton, almost 200 students with different ethnic and professional backgrounds were the first students of the Confucius Institute at McMaster University starting June, 2009.

Margherita Cina, who brought the first gold medal for Team Canada in last year's World Wushu Championship, is one of them. After almost one-year study, she and her classmates have learned several hundred Chinese characters through learning Pinyin -- the Chinesephonetic alphabet.

"I have been exposed to Chinese culture for a long time. I like Chinese culture and this is the main reason I am learning Chinese, " Cina told Xinhua in her halting yet understandableMandarin.

"The number of registered students is much more than we expected,"Dr. Min Cheng, the Director of the Institute told Xinhua. The institute is dedicated to promoting Chinese cultureand language.

Interest in retaining the Chinese language is growing among Chinese-Canadians. In some messages posted online, parents share their personal experiences and lessons, and even upload Chinese language materials such as old Chinese poetries or children's rhymes and songs for others to download.

"More and more Chinese parents come to me asking how to help their kids keep their home language while at the same time (not falling behind) in their English studies," said Terry Kelly, who is an early literacy specialist.

Kelly has led workshops on how to retain home languages over the last eight years. She says she has known some parents who feared that introducing a second language to their children would hurt the children's ability to speak fluent English. But now things are changing, Kelly says, adding parents have realized importance of children retaining their mother tongue.

Her words are echoed by Paul Yeung, a communication specialist at Royal Bank of Canada. As a Chinese descendant himself, although he can't speak Mandarin, he sent his two-year old daughter to learn Chinese.

"China's economy is booming now and the economic growth is faster than any country in the world. To master the Chinese language, it means opening more job opportunities. I want my daughter to be able to read and write Chinese."

Nonetheless, not only Chinese descendants but also Canadians from other ethnic backgrounds realized the enormous benefits that will flow from learning Chinese, as China's importance in the world grows due to its rising political and economic power.
