雙重所有格
1. 雙重所有格表示部分關係
a friend of Jenny's 珍妮的一位朋友
a favorite of my father's 我父親的最愛之一
2. 雙重所有格避免和限定詞衝突
下列單詞是限定詞，其前後都不可有名詞的所有格，所以必須採用雙重所有格：a, an, the, this, that, these, those, each, every, any, some, either, neither, no, another, several, enough, much, many, more, most, such。
that friend of my father's 我父親的那位朋友
any friends of my son's 我兒子的任何朋友
this watch of my uncle's 我叔叔的這塊手錶
3. 雙重所有格表示感情色彩
this lovely child of your sister's 你姐姐的這個可愛的孩子
that big nose of David's 戴維的那個大鼻子
4. 雙重所有格與“of結構”表達不同的內涵
He is a friend of my husband's. 他是我丈夫的一個朋友。（強調我的丈夫的朋友不止一個）
He is a friend of my husband. 他是我丈夫的朋友。（強調他對我丈夫的友好）
獨立所有格
在我國的英語語法學界通常把“獨立所有格”理解爲所有格後面名詞的省略。
1. 使用獨立所有格能避免重複
This doll is my sister's.（避免doll的重複）這是我妹妹的洋娃娃。
John's is a very large family.（避免family的重複）約翰的家是個大家庭。
I am using my car. You'll have to borrow somebody else's.（避免重複使用car）我正在用我自己的車。你得去借別人的。
2. 在不引起誤解的情況下，可以使用獨立所有格
"Whose is that?" "That's Mary's." （當面對話，不會產生誤解。）那是誰的？ 那是瑪麗的。
3. 所有格名詞後的營業場所如商店，旅館，事務所，戲院，學校，醫院，教堂常被省略，這種獨立所有格常在介詞at或to之後；若在場所、建築之前加上"the"，其後的"'s"多半可以省略
我得去看牙醫。
I have to go to the dentist's.
I have to go to the dentist.
我在理髮店遇見一位老朋友。
I met an old friend at the barber's.
I met an old friend at the barber.
4. 談到主人和客人的關係時，代表主人的所有格名詞後的house通常省略
I had a lovely evening at Peter and Helen's (house). 我在彼得和海倫家過了一個愉快的夜晚。
注意，以下的house不能省略，因爲句子中沒有表示主人和客人的關係：
My uncle's house is at the foot of the hill. 我叔叔的家在山腳下。
