Our dog, Rex, used to sit outside our front gate and bark. Every time he wanted to come into the garden he would bark until someone opened the gate. As the neighbours complained of the noise, my husband spent weeks training him to press his paw on the latch to let himself in. Rex soon became an expert at opening the gate. However, when I was going out shopping last week, I noticed him in the garden near the gate. This time he was barking so that someone would let him out! Since then, he has developed another bad habit. As soon as he opens the gate from the outside, he comes into the garden and waits until the gate shuts. Then he sits and barks until someone lets him out. After this he immediately lets himself in and begins barking again. Yesterday my husband removed the gate and Rex got so annoyed we have not seen him since.

complain of/about:對...抱怨
spend time doing sth.:花時間做某事
let himself in:讓自己進去

soon became an expert at opening the gate.
become an expert at doing:成爲做...的專家
expert常與介詞at,in,on,with連用
Ex:
an expert in economics：經濟專家
an expert on foreign affairs：外交專家
an expert with the needles：幹針線活的能手

go out shopping:出去買東西
Ex:
go swimming：去游泳
go fishing：去釣魚
go picnicking：去野餐

so that:引導目的狀語從句

erday my husband removed the gate and Rex got so annoyed we have not seen him since.
since:時間副詞，表示"打那以後..，此後"，常和完成時態連用
注意：since(加在尾巴上) = since then : 從那時起到現在爲止
so annoyed （that）we have not seen him since：...表示"如此...以至於..."；原文中that進行了省略，這種表達常出現在口語表達中

第四部分 KEY STRUCTURES AND USAGE

表示目的的幾種說法

to ， in order to ，in order that， so as to+原形，so that+目的狀語從句，to+動詞原形, that+從句

=>My husband spent weeks training him to press his paw on the latch to let himself in.
=>his time he was barking so that someone would let him out!

=>We started out early in order to avoid traffic.
=>I moved to the front of the bus so as to get a good view of the countryside.
=>He left the letter on the table in order that I might see it.
