The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'. Because the tree was mentioned in a newspaper, the number of visitors to Frinley has now increased. The tree was planted near the church fifty years ago, but it is only in recent years that it has gained an evil reputation. It is said that if anyone touches the tree, he will have bad luck; if he picks a leaf, he will die. Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims. The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down, but so far he has refused. He has pointed out that the tree is a useful source of income, as tourists have been coming from all parts of the country to see it. In spite of all that has been said, the tourists have been picking leaves and cutting their names on the tree-trunk. So far, not one of them has been struck down by sudden death !

據說弗林利這個小村裏有一棵 "該詛咒的樹" . 就因爲報上提到過這棵樹, 所以現在來弗林利參觀的人越來越多. 該樹是50年前栽在教堂附近的, 但只是近幾年纔得到了一個壞名聲. 據說, 誰要是觸摸了這棵樹, 誰就會交上惡運; 如果誰摘了一片樹葉, 誰就會死去. 很多村民相信此樹已經害了不少人. 人們曾請求教區的牧師叫人把樹砍掉, 但他直到現在也沒有同意. 他指出, 由於人們從全國各地紛紛前來參觀這棵樹, 它成了一個有用的財源. 儘管有上述種種說法, 但遊客們還是照常摘樹葉和把他們的名字刻在樹幹上. 然而到目前爲止, 還沒有一個人暴死呢!

1、The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'.
of:介詞，表示同位語關係
Ex:
紐約市          the city of New York
詹姆士這個名字  the name of James
is said:據說（被動語態）

2、Because the tree was mentioned in a newspaper, the number of visitors to Frinley has now increased.
the number:主語，所以謂語動詞用單數形式has increased
to:到...地方

3、Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims.
claim:cause the loss or death of sb.

4、The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down
have sth. done:叫別人做某事
to have the tree cut down,把這棵樹砍掉
在這個短語中 cut down是動詞 have的賓語 the tree的補足語，常用來表示叫別人完成的動作

5、In spite of all that has been said, the tourists have been picking leaves and cutting their names on the tree-trunk.
in spite of:不管，後面只能跟名詞/名詞性從句（句中跟了代詞all，後面爲that引導的定語從句，that從句中作主語則不省略）
in spite of all that...= in spite of what
all後面跟定語從句時，關係代詞只能用that

6、So far, not one of them has been struck down by sudden death !
so far:到目前爲止，一般和現在完成時連用
not one of = none of ≠ no one of  (no one 不能加 of)
strike down:擊倒，使死去

第四部分 KEY STRUCTURES AND USAGE

被動語態

注意動詞ask，help，remind的被動語態+不定式的結構

1)The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'.
=It is said that the tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'.

2)The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down, but so far he has refused.

3)The boy was told to be quiet.

4)She was reminded not to leave valuable things in the room.

強調句(it is/was+被強調的部分+that/who從句)

1)It is only in recent years that it has gained an evil reputation.(強調時間狀語)

2)It was in England that we first met.（強調地點狀語）

3)It's he who has solved the problem for year.（強調主語）

4)It was because of him that we succeeded.（強調原因狀語）
