The bar chart illustrates the average number of students per class in primary school and lower secondary school in six different countries and compares them with the world average class size in 2006.

For the two Asian countries, class size in lower secondary school exceeded that in primary school, which was opposite the world average category. South Korea’s class size was the largest compared with the other five given countries, with 34 in elementary school and 37 in lower secondary school. This was followed by Japan, with around 27 in primary school and 31 in lower secondary school.

Among the four western countries, Mexico’s secondary schools had the largest class size of 32 students, while its primary schools had far less pupils in a class (about 21), similar to the figures of the same category in UK and Denmark. Whereas Iceland, in terms of the class size in both primary school and lower secondary school, ranked at the bottom, with about 15 and 17 students per class respectively.

To sum up, Asian countries such as South Korea and Japan had a larger class size than the global average, while the average class sizes in western countries were much smaller, except for Mexico whose class size in middle schools outnumbered world average size.

Today, many people believe that college students should focus on one field of study, while a lot others argue that they should be encouraged to widened their scope of learning.

The arguments for concentrating on one specific discipline are valid. For one thing, it allows students to devote more time and energy to their specialized subject while relieving them from extra burden possibly caused by the study of multiple fields. With this intensive study, students are more likely to explore their chosen field in depth and achieve academic excellence. For another, specializing in one subject could better equip college students with the knowledge and skills required of that subject-specific career, thus giving them a head start in the job market. For example, whether a candidate has a four-year study in a certain subject constitutes as a significant factor for many job positions, such as data scientists, lawyers and doctors.

Meanwhile, extending one’s study to multiple fields has its own advantages. To begin with, the complexity of modern society determines that many subjects are by nature interdisciplinary. If students are confined to only field of study, their knowledge could be skewed and narrow. By contrast, if they could broaden their vision in various fields, they stand a better to chance to combine different subjects for more insights. For instance, students who study both medical science and computer science could better explore how artificial intelligence can be applied to disease diagnosis and other medical services. Furthermore, universities are expected not only to cultivate academics; more importantly, they also shoulder the responsibility of nurturing well-developed citizens in society. An extensive study in sciences, liberal arts, social sciences as well as many other fields will be conducive to fostering a more knowledgeable, sensible and responsible person.

To conclude, I believe that studying one subject or multiple ones are beneficial in their own respective. I would suggest that students familiarize themselves with a wide range of subjects in their early university years before they find their specific subject of interest and conduct an in-depth study later.

scope: n.   範圍

valid: adj.   有效的;正當的
