第二部分 閱讀理解(共兩節,滿分40分)

第一節(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項,並在答題卡上將該項塗黑。

From my earlier memory of Mother, it seemed quite natural to think of her as different, nor of everyday things as Father was. In those days he was a young-looking man. He did not hesitate to make friends with children as soon as they were able to talk to him and laugh at his stories. Mother was older than he was. She must have been a woman of nearly forty, but she seemed even older. She changed little for a long time, showing no indication of growing old at all until, towards the end of her life, she suddenly became an old lady.

I was always inquisitive about Mother’s age. She never had birthdays like other people, nor did anyone else in our family. No candles were ever lit or cakes made or presents given in our house. To my friends in the street who talked delightfully about their birthday parties, I would repeat my mother’s words that such celebrations were only foolish.

“Nothing but deception,” she would say. “As though life can be marked by birthdays. It’s deeds, not years, that matter.”

Although I often repeated her words and even prided myself on not having birthdays, I once could not help asking Mother when she was born.

“I was born. I’m alive as you can see, so what more do you want to know?” she replied, so sharply that I never asked her about her age again.

In so many other ways Mother was different. Whereas all the rest of the women I knew in the neighboring houses took pride in their housewifely abilities, their new furniture, the neat appearance of their homes, Mother regarded all those things as of little importance. Our house always looked as if we had just moved in or were about to move out.

21. How did Father impress the author?

A. He liked writing stories. B. He talked a lot.

C. He was a very young man. D. He was popular with children.

22. Before the end of her life, Mother ______.

A. looked quite young B. looked like an old lady

C. looked younger than she was D. looked like a 40-year-old woman

23. What does the underlined word “inquisitive” (in Paragraph 2) probably mean?

A. Certain. B. Curious. C. Cautious. D. Confident.

24. What do we learn about Mother?

A. She was lazy. B. She was strict.

C. She was proud. D. She was special.

In today’s consumer world, we’ve never had so much, yet it seems we’ve never been so unsatisfied. The cost of housing has been rising for decades, and the cost to the planet has been huge, too. But there is a way to live a simpler, greener, and more affordable life: buy a TinyDwelling home!

TinyDwelling homes are very small, yet comfortable houses at affordable prices. Each TinyDwelling home has a contemporary design and included a living room, kitchen, bathroom, upstairs sleeping area, and convenient storage space. TinyDwelling homes are cheap to run and ecologically-friendly, too. All you need is a small heater to keep your house warm in cold weather, and solar panels (電池板) in order to provide light and electricity.

TinyDwelling is part of the small-living movement that began in the late 1990s. Back then, a growing number of people began to live in very small homes. They wanted to reduce their possessions, living space, and energy costs, so as to lead more ecologically-friendly lives. But the small-living movement really took off after the economic crisis of 2008, when many people realized that they couldn’t afford to keep large homes.

Lizzy Morriaon, a small-living enthusiast, started TinyDwelling homes in 2008 to meet the needs of these people. Since then, Lizzy has been designing and building homes nonstop, and TinyDwelling homes have become so popular that thousands of people have bought one. And Lizzy hasn’t only designing and building houses, but she has also been teaching people how to build them. Simply buy the plans and materials so that you can build your own home, and save even more money!

25. It is implied in Paragraph 1 that ______.

A. rich people are very unsatisfied

B. poor people have no houses to live

C. people are damaging the environment

D. people spend much money saving the planet

26. What do we know about the small-living movement?

A. It became quite popular after 2008.

B. It aimed to handle the economic crisis.

C. It was started by people without houses.

D. It was well received by house designers.

27. What is the main attraction of TinyDwelling homes?

A. They provide storage space. B. They are affordable.

C. They have upstairs sleeping area. D. They are equipped with solar panels.

28. Besides designing TinyDwelling homes, Lizzy also ______.

A. helped people to build them B. encouraged people to join the movement

C. taught people to save money D. urged people to buy protect the environment

General introduction

The Future Stars was set up in 1988 as a non-profit service center for child development devoted to providing quality childcare in a loving and educational environment for children 6 weeks to 6 years of age. Our funds mainly come from public donations.

A healthy curiosity about learning is the most important quality for early childhood development. We aim at offering high quality developmentally age-appropriate activities for early childhood, the most important time of child development, so that they can do better after they start formal schooling.

Hours of operation

Childcare will be provided for the child from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday except for holidays. Children may not arrive before 7:00 am or remain after 6:00 pm. If an emergency should arise, the parent should immediately make us know in consideration of our work arrangements. A late charge of $1.00 per minute will be assessed if the child is not picked up by 6:05 pm. Charges for these services are to be paid directly to the staff person that has been looking after your child until your arrival, not to the center. Failure to pay late charges may affect continued services with the center.

Tuition

When it has been confirmed that a position is available for your child, you must pay a registration (註冊) fee of $200 per child.

The weekly tuition fee is $ 98.00. You can make payments either by credit card or in cash on Monday every week. If your payment is not made by Tuesday at 9:00 am, you will be charged a $25.00 late fee.

For more information, please call 434-293-6110 or visit

30. If you want your child to receive childcare services from the Future Stars, you must ______.

C. pay every Tuesday D. pay extra for delayed payment

31. What is the purpose of the passage?

C. To tell the benefits of childcare. D. To introduce a child development center.

D

Parents should stop blaming themselves because there’s not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.

I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懶散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I don’t know what to do with him these days,” she said. “He’s forgotten all the manners we taught him.”

He hasn’t forgotten them. He’s just decided that he’s not going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.

Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, “I don’t like your dress; it’s ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home.

“Where did we go wrong?” her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least, no more than the rest of that unfortunate race, parents.

32. This text is most probably written by ______.

A. a parent with teenage children B. a headmaster of a middle school

C. a specialist in teenager studies D. a doctor for mental health problems

33. The underlined word “it” (in Paragraph 2) refers to ______.

A. the opinion that a child has of his parents

B. the change from good to bad that’s seen in a child

C. the way that parents often blame themselves

D. the advice that parents want their children to follow

34. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as ______.

A. lazy B. quiet C. unusual D. rude

35. What is the author’s opinion about the sudden change in teenage children?

A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it.

B. Parents have led to the change in their children.

C. Parents should pay still more attention to the change.

D. Parents should work more closely with school teachers.

If you’ve ever wondered how dancers would tell the story of a man and a woman’s love for each other through dance moves, you should watch people dance the Rumba.

36 And it is considered the most passionate (富有激情的) ballroom dance.

Like many Latin dances, the Rumba has its roots in Africa. When the Spanish first moved to the New World, they brought African slaves to work for them. 37 When they were finished with a hard day’s work, they would sometimes find the person they were in love with and dance the Rumba. 38 They wanted to dance the Rumba in public!

The dance slowly spread and grew in popularity. Then, in the 1930s, the famous dance teacher Monsieur Pierre saw the Rumba being danced in New York and he decided it was so exciting and interesting it should be danced in London, too. 39

Today there are several types of Rumba people dance. Some dance a type of Rumba that is very fast and features (以……爲特點) big movements. 40 No matter what type of Rumba people dance, the story the dance tells is still the same: the love between a man and a woman.

A. From there, the Rumba spread across the world.

B. This popular dance is from the island nation of Cuba.

C. Others dance a slow type of Rumba and use small steps.

D. When slave masters saw this dance, they were impressed.

E. Slaves worked long hours and had very few ways to relax.

F. When the Rumba was first danced, it referred to a dance party.

G. This dance became a formal dance done in public with a partner.

BLOOD DRIVE & MARROW (骨髓) REGISTRATION

“These patients deserve a chance at a normal, happy future and they rely on the kindness of strangers to make that happen.”

—Daisy, Isabelle's Mother

Isabelle is the daughter of Daisy and Saman Mirzaei. In January 2008 Isabelle was diagnosed (診斷) with a genetic blood disorder, beta thalassemia. Isabelle's body is unable to produce healthy red blood cells. As a result, Isabelle has been receiving blood transfusions (輸血) every 4-6 weeks since she was 11 months old. A lifetime of regular transfusions can lead to serious medical problems. Her only chance at a normal, healthy life is to have a marrow transplant. Isabelle is an only child, so doctors have started a search for an unrelated marrow donor through the Be The Match Registry. The Mirzaei family asks that you consider helping patients like Isabelle by registering to be a marrow donor and give the gift of life, the gift of blood.

In the mid1950s, I was a somewhat bored earlyadolescent male student who believed that doing_any_more_than_necessary_was_wasted_effort. One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment.

In Mrs. Totten's eighthgrade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson, Indiana, we were learning to add and subtract decimals (小數).

Our teacher typically assigned daily homework, which would be recited in class the following day. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answers to homework questions.

Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.

Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time, I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations.

What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs. Totten made her way from the beginning of the class, I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get. I tried to work it out before she got to me, but I had brain freeze and couldn't function.

When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I'd got for problem No. 14. “I ...I didn't get anything,” I answered, and my face felt warm.

“Correct,” she said.

It turned out that the correct answer was zero.

What did I learn that day? First, always do all your homework. Second, in real life it isn't always what you say but how you say it that matters. Third, I would never make it as a mathematician.

If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don?t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure youre brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a daytoday basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for D|S99 to D|S199, depending on features. The U.S. is the first target market.

Serval says that one day, itll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

28. Which of the following might make the Kolibree toothbrush fun?

can be used to update mobile phones.

can be used to play mobile phone games.

can send messages to other users.

can talk to its developers.

can we infer about Servals children?

were unwilling to brush their teeth.

often failed to clean their toothbrushes.

Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires — not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of welldeveloped and hearty capacities (能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped (淹沒) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They_live_in_too_big_a_house_with_too_many_rooms,_yet_their_house_of_life_is_a_hut.

Your house of life ought to be a mansion (豪宅), a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.

Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry.

Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library.

Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit.

Whateve r rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.
