whether 和 if 都可以作“是否”解，但二者在具體使用時有一定的區別。

　　一、一般情況下，if 和 whether 均可用在轉述一般疑問句的間接引語中引導賓語從句。例如：

He asked me whether/if we wanted a drink. 他問我們是否要喝點東西。

He didn’t know whether/if she was a nurse. 他不知道她是否是一位護士。

但在有些動詞後多用whether 不用if。如：

We discussed whether we should close the shop. 我們討論了是否該關閉那家商店。(比用 if 正規)

當使用 if 會引起歧義時應用whether 。如: “我不知道是否在下雪”應譯爲I don’t know whether it is snowing, 而不說I don’t know if it is snowing(因爲if也可表示條件)。

另外，whether 引導的從句的謂語動詞不能用否定形式，但 if 引導的從句的謂語可以用否定形 式。如：

I don’t care whether it doesn’t rain. (錯誤)

I don’t care if it doesn’t rain.(正確)

　　二、當用or提出兩種選擇時，whether更常用,尤其是在正式文體中。如：

Let me know whether you can come or not. 告訴我你來還是不來。

I wonder whether it is big enough or not. 我不知道它是否夠大。

當然，在口語中有時也說“if you can come or not”，但whether後面可以直接跟or not, if後則不行。如上句可改爲：

Let me know whether or not you can come.

　　三、在介詞後只能用whether，不能用 if。如：

There was a big argument about whether we should move to a new house. 關於我們是否應搬新家發生了激烈的爭論。

It depends on whether the letter arrives in time. 這取決於信是否來得及時。

　　四、在帶to的不定式前只能用whether，不能用 if。如：

I cannot decide whether to get married now or wait. 我不能決定是該現在就結婚還是等待。

She hasn’t decided whether to go or not. 她還沒決定去還是不去。

　　五、在引導主語從句，表語從句和同位語從句時，一般只能用whether不用 if。如：

Whether it is true or not remains a question. (主語從句)那是不是真的還是個問題。

The question is whether the man can be trusted.(表語從句)問題是那個人是否可以信任。

引導表語從句時，只有在特別非正式的語體中可用if。如：

The question is if the man can be trusted。

Have you discussed the question whether you have enough time to do the work?(同位語從句)你們有沒有討論過是否有足夠的時間來做這項工作?
