The show, staged on Saturday in Nanjing University in the format of a popular Chinese TV dating show "If You Are the One," only saw one couple successfully matched each other and received a 1,000-yuan (154 U.S. dollars) "love fund" from the school.

Nanjing University has joined a number of elite schools in China to offer students lectures on love and relationships. Previous media reports said Tianjin University in north China have also announced plans to start a course called "The Theory and Practice of Love," proposed by its students.

First started in 2014, the lectures on love at Nanjing University became very popular within and outside of the school. Participants of Saturday's dating show also came from various universities in Nanjing.

According to a survey conducted among 1,500 post-graduates in Nanjing University, 70 percent had not been in a relationship, and many wondered how to start a conversation with the opposite sex.

Chen Changkai, lecturer of the course, said that young people nowadays have worse face-to-face communication skills than their predecessors because they are more used to communications online.

"The purpose of the course is not only teach the students how to love, but how to interact with the other gender," Chen was quoted by a local newspaper as saying.
