Hong Kong police issued a third photo of the suspects sought in a knife attack on a Hong Kong journalist earlier this week that has sent shockwaves through the city.

Kevin Lau, the former editor of respected Chinese-language Ming Pao, was slashed with a knife half-a-dozen times Wednesday near a restaurant he was known to regularly frequent. Just weeks before the attack, Mr. Lau had been abruptly dismissed from his Ming Pao post to make way for a successor from Malaysia, in a move that stirred fierce waves of protest within the newsroom.

Mr. Lau was hospitalized after the attack and has been in critical condition for two days. On Friday, his condition was upgraded to serious from critical. No arrests have been made.

Police, who earlier released two grainy photos of the two suspects involved--one who perpetrated the attack, the other who drove the getaway motorcycle--on Thursday night released a third image showing one of the suspects boarding a taxi while carrying a travel bag and helmet. Police say they believe the taxi was headed toward Kornhill, a large private housing development, and are seeking the driver of the cab.

Legislative Council President Jasper Tsang, who was among several legislators who visited Mr. Lau in the hospital Friday morning, said he appeared to have improved. 'His spirits are quite good--he was even able to greet me,' he said. Another legislator, James Tien, reported that Mr. Lau was even able to joke about wanting a coffee fix.

Though police have offered no motive, some local residents and journalists have questioned whether the attack on Mr. Lau--who has become a rallying point for press-freedom advocates since his dismissal--was intended as an occupational threat or warning. Ming Pao is one of the city's best-respected Chinese newspapers and recently collaborated with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists to expose offshore companies held by relatives of mainland officials in tax havens.

In an editorial on Thursday, the state-run Chinese tabloid Global Times lambasted those who have suggested Mr. Lau's attack might be the product of his work at Ming Pao. 'Before the perpetrators are caught, it is highly irresponsible to imply who was behind the incident or what forces plotted the attack,' the paper said, calling suggestions that the attack might have been provoked because Mr. Lau offended mainland authorities a 'groundless allegation.'

Ming Pao earlier this week offered a 1 million Hong Kong dollar (US$130,000) reward for information on the attack. That sum has now more than tripled thanks donations, the newspaper said. The publication is currently working with police and will review its reporting from 2013 to try to determine whether any of its coverage might have prompted the ambush.

Previous attacks on Hong Kong journalists--with the exception of a 2008 plot to assassinate pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai--generally have yielded few convictions.

Ming Pao staff and students held scattered protests in Mr. Lau's support this week, some clothed in black and wearing black ribbons. The Hong Kong Journalists Association is planning a rally Sunday to denounce the attack, a week after another march in support of press freedoms in the former British colony. Global press freedom groups have recently warned that the city's atmosphere for local reporters is growing distinctly chillier.

In an unrelated earnings news conference Friday afternoon, Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, who is Asia's richest man, also condemned the attack. 'Violent activities are wrong, no matter what the circumstances are,' he said. 'Rule of law is the bedrock of Hong Kong. Without rule of law, we are nothing.'
