What are your thoughts on the younger, emerging film directors coming out of China?

《華爾街日報》:您對中國新近崛起的年輕一代電影導演有何看法?

I really hope the younger generation of film directors, who don't share the same background with my generation, would do something good in the near future. They just focus on the individual's life, which is very interesting, but probably they need to find an excellent way to tell the story. The audience sitting in the dark is not sitting there like prayers, like Roman Catholic believers. They want to enjoy something.

陳凱歌:我真的希望和我們這一代有着不同背景的年輕一代電影導演能在最近出些好東西。他們只關注個人的生活,這一點非常有意思,但是他們可能需要找到一個很好的方法來講故事。坐在暗處看電影的觀衆並不是像禱告者、像羅馬天主教信徒一樣坐在那兒。他們想獲得一些享受。

This is my experience: What you want to say is not more important than what people want to see. If you can provide something people really enjoy watching, then you will be accepted as a film director.

我的經驗是──人們想看的東西和你想說的東西同樣重要。如果你能提供一些大家真正喜歡看的東西,那麼你的電影導演身份就會被大家接受。

What do you hope to accomplish going forward in the industry?

《華爾街日報》:未來您希望在這個行業中實現什麼目標?

My goal is first of all to satisfy the need of the Chinese audience first and to tell them something I feel will be important. I didn't see myself as someone who would survive in the entertainment business, but now I tell myself I'm no different. I'm in this business and I have to do something to make audiences feel excited.

陳凱歌:我的目標首先是要先滿足中國觀衆的需求,然後告訴他們一些我覺得重要的東西。過去我不認爲自己是一個能在娛樂業生存下來的人,但是現在我告訴自己我和別人沒什麼區別。身處這個行業,我必須做一些讓觀衆覺得興奮的事情。

So I'm facing a lot of different choices and I may do an action film as well in the near future, maybe something with funny kung fu why not [laughing]? But I believe I can do something serious to change society and the culture.

現在我面臨許多不同的選擇,最近我也有可能導演一部動作片,也許是融入搞笑功夫元素的戲,爲什麼不呢(陳凱歌說到此處笑了起來)?但是我相信自己能夠做一些嚴肅的事情來改變社會和文化。

What's your opinion of new technology, like 3-D, that is shaping the film market?

《華爾街日報》:您如何看待決定電影市場發展方向的新技術,比如說3-D?

I like American action films, but I just like the good ones. There's an Oscar-winning picture called 'French Connection' that's an action film and I love it because it's a fresh idea. It's not just killing and fighting but manages to touch people's hearts and moves people through relatable characters. Popcorn films are always very popular because people don't want to think. They walk in the theatre to relax and they don't want to think about anything, so that's why artistic films eventually lose in the market because people don't want to think that much. And that's natural.

陳凱歌:我喜歡美國的動作片,但是我只喜歡優秀的動作片。有一部曾獲得奧斯卡獎的動作電影叫《法國販毒網》(French Connection),我非常喜歡它,因爲它是一個新鮮的理念。它不只是打打殺殺,而是設法去打動大家的心,通過讓人覺得和自己有關的角色來感動大家。爆米花電影總是非常受歡迎,因爲人們不願去想問題。他們走進電影院是爲了放鬆,不願去思考任何事情,這就是爲什麼藝術電影最終會在市場失利的原因,因爲大家不願意去想那麼多。這很自然。

But if people don't want to think and you don't see cinema as a philosophy you can find another way to tell a very interesting story. Maybe that's a way to attract people coming in. I'm still very curious about what will be the next step for Hollywood to create new style action films.

但是,如果大家不願想問題,而且也不認爲電影是一種哲學,那麼你可以尋找另一種方法來講述一個非常有趣的故事,或許那就是吸引人們走進影院的一個方法。我依然十分好奇好萊塢下一步會做些什麼來創作新風格的動作電影。

I enjoy watching films like 'Avatar,' because I believe it's like a dream, a dream that will take you to another planet. But you can know from it the American spirit. So what's the Chinese spirit? Why in the last decade has everything changed so much? Why do people feel like there's a chance to have a new hope? What can we do to help people have a dream? That's very important for us to say.

我喜歡看《阿凡達》(Avatar)這樣的電影,因爲我認爲它就像一個夢,一個會把你帶到另一個星球的夢,但是你還是能從中瞭解美國精神。那麼中國精神又是什麼呢?爲什麼過去十年一切發生了這麼大的變化?人們爲什麼會覺得有機會去擁有新的希望呢?我們可以做些什麼來幫助人們擁有夢想?這些是我們需要表達的非常重要的東西。

How does the political system in China affect the environment for film making?

《華爾街日報》:中國的政治體制對電影創作環境產生了什麼樣的影響?

Mr. Chen: I have been very optimistic about life, because I know that life is short. Whatever happens, I ask myself to keep a smile to the world.

陳凱歌:一直以來我對生活都很樂觀,因爲我知道生命短暫。無論發生什麼,我都要自己一直微笑着面對世界。

We still have the same problem we had three decades ago. As filmmakers, we feel tired. There's this awkward situation where it is difficult to express everything you want the way that you want.

我們仍然面臨和30年前一樣的問題,作爲電影創作人員,我們感到疲憊。現在存在這麼一種尷尬境地,你在其中很難用你自己想用的方法來表達每一件事情。

But this is what it is, and it will take a long time to improve.

但是事情就是這樣,它需要很長時間來改善。

Back thirty years ago, it would be impossible to create a private production company. No way. You could only work with state-run studios. Now it is natural, there are private producers and funds to help you make films.

回到30年前,創辦一傢俬營製作公司是不可能的事情。絕無可能。你只能和國營製片廠合作。如今這已經是很自然的事情了,有私營製片公司和基金來幫助你製作電影。

In a big country, change takes a long time. So I'm enjoying being alive, having children, listening to different voices, and hope to continue to make films for another 20 years!
