1. 競選是什麼鬼

冷靜的時候人畜無害，受到威脅的時候根本擋不住。
That’s what Thomas Nast thought in 1874 when he drew an elephant to depict the Republican Party in a political cartoon.
而托馬斯·納斯特也是這麼想的，所以他在1874年的一副政治漫畫裏用一隻大象來象徵共和黨。
It didn’t take long for newspapers across the country to pick up the image.
沒過多久，全國的報紙都開始用這個形象了。
The Republican Party and the packing term had been united ever since.
而自那以後共和黨和這個公眾形象就沒有分開過。
We may not know that President of Sri Lanka gave a baby elephant to President Regan in 1984.
我們可能不知道的是：1984年斯里蘭卡的總統送了一隻象寶寶給里根總統。
And Gerald and Betty Ford had an elephant room in their house decorated with elephant ornaments given to the couple by the Grand Old Party supporters.
而傑拉德·福特和貝蒂·福特的家裏還有個擺滿了大象裝飾品的房間，這些東西都是共老大黨的支持者送給他們的。
But hang on. Why is the Republican Party also called the Grand Old Party?
不過，等一下，為什麼叫“老大黨”？
The party’s nickname originally stood for Gallant Old Party.
其實這個黨的暱稱原本是“宏偉、悠久的黨”。
According to one story, it was shortened to G.O.P. when the newspaper ran out of space in an article.
根據一則故事，有張報紙在空間不夠的情況下把這個暱稱縮寫成G.O.P.了。
As the name suggests, the party has been around for a long time since 1854 in fact.
正如這個名稱所説，這個政黨已經很古老了，實際上可以追溯到1854年。
Not long after that the first Republican President was elected – Abraham Lincoln.
在那之後不久，美國擁有了第一位共和黨總統——亞伯拉罕·林肯。
That’s why the Republican Party was known as the party of Lincoln.
這也就是為什麼共和黨又被稱為林肯的政黨。
Since Lincoln there have been 17 Republican Presidents.
在林肯之後，有17位總統出自共和黨。
And this may sound a little crazy. Since 1928 no Republican has won without Richard Dixon or Bush attached to the ticket.

Well they say an elephant never forgets. With 160 years under the party’s bell, there’s a lot to remember.
