A

Albert Einstein was probably the most famous scientist of the twentieth century. He changed scientific thinking in the modern world. He is generally considered as the greatest physicist who ever lived. What's more, he devoted a lot of his time and energy to working for human rights and progress.

In 1933, while Einstein was visiting England and the United States, the Nazi government of Germany took all his things away, including his position and his citizenship. Einstein then settled down in the United States. In 1939, Einstein, who loved peace—afraid of a world in which only Hitler would had an atomic bomb—tried hard to persuade President Franklin evelt in a famous letter to have the United States start uranium research. That Germany, after all, had no bomb, and that the first bomb would fall on Japan, could not have been expected. After the war, Einstein never stopped working for peace and reducing the number of soldiers in the world.

Although he wasn't connected with any accepted religion,Einstein felt that trust in a personal God was too special an idea to be suitable to the God at work in this universe, but he never believed that the universe was one of chance or disorder. The universe to him was one of pure law and once said,"God may know everything, but he is not hateful."

1. From the passage we know that _______ .

A. no scientist is as great as Albert Einstein during this century

A. have continued his scientific research

B. have won another Nobel Prize for physics

C. not have advised starting uranium research in the U.S.A.

D. not have moved to the U.S.A.

3. Einstein _______ in 1933.

C. became a man without a country D. both A and C

4. Einstein believed that everything in the universe _______ .

B. had nothing to do with each other

B

For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us. Scientists have also sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive to such

Message.

Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1,000 stars, all within 100 light years off Earth. In addition, they will scan(掃視) the entire sky to"listen" for radio messages from more distant stars. Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time. Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise.

Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy(銀河系), scientists find that five percent are like our sun. Perhaps half of them have a planet like Earth. Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution(進化) of life. Based on the inhabitable(可以居住的) planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life.

However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent(有智力的) life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.

Other scientists believe that our search hasn't been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy. Although our sun family is only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billion years old. In that time, some scientists think it is likely that civilization much more advanced than ours have developed. Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals;perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us. If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.

5. How many planets in the Milky Way Galaxy might be inhabitable?

A. 5 billion. B. 10 billion. C. 15 billion. D. 200 billion.

h of these statements is true based on the information in the passage?

A. Our sun family is about 20 billion years old.

B. Most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planets.

C. Scientists try to send radio and television messages in order to get in touch with someone in outer space.

D. Scientists don't believe that there might be life on other planets.

In 1896, 17-year-old Einstein went to Zurich to study physics. There he met a girl from Hungary. They studied in the same class and the same interest in physics brought the two together and they became good friends. Before long, they fell in love with each other. In 1903, when Einstein was 24, he married Marits, who was 4 years older than he.

After their marriage, Einstein devoted himself to the research of the great theory. To give her husband more help, Marits gave up her own work, and became a good wife and assistant. She tried her best to encourage him whenever possible. She was sure that her husband would succeed. They often discussed the theory while walking outside or sitting together in the room. They even did that in their letters when one of them was away from home.

In 1914, the Einsteins moved to Berlin and settled down there. At that time, Einstein's theory proved to be correct and he had become famous all over the world. Marits was very proud of her husband with his success. But it was not long before the First World War broke out. Marits, as well as her two sons, who were on holidays in Switzerland, couldn't come back to Berlin any longer. The war not only stopped Einstein's work but also broke up the warm, happy family. In 1919, Einstein and Marits had to get divorced (離婚).

George was from the United States and had come to London for a holiday. One day he was not feeling well, so he went to a clerk at the desk of his hotel and said, “I want to see a doctor. Can you give me the name of a good one?” The clerk looked in a book and then said, “Dr. Ken- Neth Grey, 61010.” George said, “Thank you very much. Is he expensive?” “Well,” the clerk answered, “he always charges his patients two pounds for the first visit to him, and £ 1.50 for later visits. ”

George decided to save 50p, so when he went to see the doctor, he said, “I’ve come again, doctor. “For a few seconds the doctor looked at his face carefully without saying anything. Then he nodded and said, “Oh, yes.” He examined him and then he said, “Everything’s going as it should do. Just continue with the medicine I gave you last time. ”

Listening

A、rest iage stant ever

6. succeed 7. settled d days 10. stopped

B、1-5 BAABC

C、6-10 CABBB 11-15 ACABB

二、Talking

3. 選A。 He’s a very nice person可以推斷出,也是一位好鄰居。

1. 選A。 B項表示“不可能”,語氣上和A相比較弱;C項表示“沒有機會”和下句It was her fault沒聯繫。

This指代下文,That指代上文,從文中可以看出that指代上句“calling so late”沒有關係。故用That's okay=That's all right“沒關係”是道歉的應答語。

“Never mind”是沒關係,“All right”是“好吧”的意思,正確的應爲“That's all right”,可以排除A、B、C,所以答案爲D。

4. 選B。 Good luck! Cheers!

5. 選A。 My pleasure. I'm glad to hear that的意思是“聽到這件事我很高興”;No, thanks是中式英語;It's OK.

6. 選B。It all depends或That depends是固定用法,意思是“這都難說,得看情況” 所以。答案爲B。

7. 選A。 Can you come?

It's one's/a pleasure是對“Thank you”的回答;It doesn't matter是對“Sorry”的回答。I agree with you是同意別人的觀點、看法。
