一ld 表示推測。
意爲“按道理說應該會”“想必會”“一定會”，既突出了把握性，又留下了自己“萬一”的餘地。
eg.“Hi, Mum! I’m on the bus, I should be home in about ten minutes.”
媽媽，我已經在汽車上了，十來分鐘可以到家。
高考有這樣一道試題：
--- When can I come for the photos ? I need them tomorrow afternoon?

A. can B. should C. might D. need
本題意爲：我什麼時候來取相片?明天下午我需要這些相片。
(明天中午)12點前一定會洗出來的。
答案爲：B
這是一道在當年難度係數比較大，通過率爲29.2%，區分度爲-0.198的高考試題。A項表示推測時常用於否定句和疑問句中。C項表示推測語氣不太肯定。Should表示略微遊移的推測，既回答了顧客的詢問，不失禮貌，又爲照片有可能尚未洗好，顧客到時取不到留下了迴旋的餘地體現了店主的精明與用詞經過仔細推敲。
再看幾例 should表示推測的例句：
1.I think he should arrive by nine o’clock..
我想他應該會在9點前到達。
should be there by now, I think.
我想他們現在該到那兒了。
men from the government should be here before long.
政府派來的人不久就會到這兒。
此外，should 後還可以接不定式的完成時：
They should have arrived in Beijing by this time.
他們這時該已到北京了。

綜上所述，should表示推測時，常可表示在一段時間內可能發生的事或某人的期望。一般句末有時間狀語，或有語境暗示。所表示的猜測發生的可能性很大。
二。must 表推測
1) must用在肯定句中表示較有把握的推測，意爲"一定"。
2) must表對現在的狀態或現在正發生的事情的推測時， must 後面通常接系動詞be 的原形或行爲動詞的進行式。
eg. You have worked hard all must be tired. 你辛苦幹一整天，一定累了。(對現在情況的推測判斷)
He must be working in his office. 他一定在辦公室呢。
比較：
He must be staying there.
他現在肯定呆在那裏。
He must stay there。
他必須呆在那。
3) must 表示對已發生的事情的推測時，must 要接完成式。
I didn't hear the phone. I must have been asleep. 我剛纔沒有聽到電話，我想必是睡着了。
4) must表示對過去某時正發生的事情的推測，must 後面要接不定式的完成進行式。
---Why didn't you answer my phone call?
---Well, I must have been sleeping, so I didn't hear it。
5) 否定推測用can't。
If Tom didn't leave here until five o'clock, he can't be home yet. 如果湯姆五點才離開這兒，他此時一定還未到家。
三 can 表推測
先看看下面這道題：

此題應選B。該題容易誤選A。下面談談can，could表示推測的有關用法：
1. 表示理論上的可能性(即從理論上分析是可能的，但實際未必會發生)，可用 can(表現在)或 could(表過去)：
He is in poor health. He can be ill at any time. 他身體不好，隨時都可能會生病。
Even experts can make mistakes. 即使是專家也可能會出差錯。
My mother could be very unpleasant at times. 我母親有時候會讓人非常不愉快。
2. 表示現實可能性，這包含兩個方面的含義：一是指將來可能性，一是指現在的可能性，在這兩種用法中，通常都不用 can，但可用 could(可以指現在，相當於 may / might)：
今年夏天我們可能要去日本。(將來可能性)
正：We could [may，might] go to Japan this summer.
誤：We can go to Japan this summer.
你可能是對的，但我不認爲你對。(現在可能性)
正：You could [may，might] be right，but I don’t think you are.
誤：You can be right，but I don’t think you are.
有時也用can來表示現在的可能性，但那通常只限於否定句或疑問句中：
It can’t be true. 那不可能是真的。
What can he possibly want? 他可能會想要什麼呢?
