1、 not only 位於句首時, 該句的主語和謂語要部分倒裝。

Not only does the sun give us light but also it gives us heat.

2、not only … but also 不能用在否定句中。例如：

正 They fear neither hardship nor death.

3、not only … but also 連接兩個名詞作主語時, 謂語動詞要根據but also 後的名詞決定單、複數(就近原則)。例如：

因爲not only plays the piano 與 but also the violin 在語法結構上不對稱。

5. not only 不能拆開使用, 但 but also 卻可以分開使用。例如：

The area was not only hit by an unexpected heavy rain, but some bridges were also washed away.

這個地區不僅受到了暴雨襲擊，而且部分橋樑也被沖走了。

6、在not also 搭配中，可以只用but 或只用also, 甚至可以把 but also 都省略掉。例如：

8、可以用 merely, just, simply 等替代 not only 中的 only. 例如：

9、not only ... but also ... 相當於... as well as ... 結構。兩者強調的都是後面那一部分的內容，翻譯時 要先譯 as well as 後面的詞。例如：
