和傳統筆試重閱讀有很大不同的是，機考更注重聽力，聽力比重佔70%。作文部分也融入了聽力要求，首先要看一段視頻，看懂了視頻以後在作文裏簡單描述視頻內容，並闡發自己的觀點。"如果沒有聽懂視頻，作文就根本無從下手。"
增加跟讀環節
在聽力部分後面增加了跟讀的環節，需要考生對着計算機的麥克風重複之前聽到的對話，以此考查考生的口語是否標準。所以在考試前，考生們需要調試計算機的麥克風音量。
機考的試題的變化
純粹聽力的題目仍然和新四級紙筆考試一樣，佔據35%的比重，而跟讀題可以劃入聽力口語的範圍，其他除純粹閱讀以外的題型都是或以聽力材料或以閱讀材料作爲話題引入或答題基礎的，並不能完全併入聽力板塊。純粹閱讀的題目從新四級紙筆考試的35%降至30%，但仍有其他題目可能與閱讀有關。整體來看，閱讀不能小視，聽力更是如此。上機考試的新四級是以聽和讀全面帶動說與寫，這也從語言學的角度更好的印證了輸入與輸出的關係。
