Alittle under one-third of U.S. families have no Internet access and do not planto get it, with most of the holdouts seeing little use for it in their lives, according to a survey released on Friday.

ParkAssociates, a Dallas-based technology market research firm, said 29 percent ofU.S. families, or 31 million homes, do not have Internet access and do notintend to subscribe(預訂)to an Internet service over the next 12 months. Thesecond annual National Technology Scan conducted by Park found that the mainreason why potential customers say they do not subscribe to the Internet isbecause of the low value to their daily lives rather than concerns overcost.

Forty-fourpercent of these families say they are not interested in anything on theInternet, versus just 22 percent who say they cannot afford a computer or thecost of Internet service, the survey showed. The answer “I’m not sure how to usethe Internet” came from 17 percent of participants who do not subscribe. Theresponse “I do all my e-commerce shopping and YouTube-watching at work” wascited by 14 percent of Internet-access users. Three percent said the Internetdoesn’t reach their homes.

Thestudy found U.S. broadband adoption grew to 52 percent over 2006, up from 42percent in 2005. Roughly half of new subscribers converted(轉變)from slower-speed,dial-up Internet access while the other half of families had no prioraccess.

“Theindustry continues to chip(擊破)away at the core of non-subscribers, but has along way to go,” said John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates.“Entertainment applications will be the key. 第二篇:

Somethingin chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers.

Theirstudy found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effectivein stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine atpresent.

TheImperial College London researchers who published their results online said thediscovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is notnecessarily harmful(有害的) it can have a major effect on the quality of life, andthis discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” saidProfessor Peter Barnes.

Tenhealthy volunteers(志願者) were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill thatcontains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor theresearchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levelsof capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of howwell the medicine are stopping coughs.

Theteam found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin needto produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. Whenthey were given codeine they need only slightly higher levers of capsaicin tocause a cough compared with the placebo.

Theresearchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a verve activity(神經活動),which cause coughing. They also found that unlike some standard coughtreatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness.

rding to Professor Barnes, theobromine ______.

ot be as effective as codeine

be harmful to people’s health

ot be separated from chocolate

be a more effective cure for coughs

was used in the experiment to cause coughing?

bromine. B. Codeine. C. Capsaicin. D. Placebo.

patients with bad coughs

divided into the three groups

ived standard treatments

ered little side effects

h of the following would be the best title for the text?

ine: A New Medicine B. Chocolate May Cure Coughs

h Treatment: A Hard Case D. Theobromine Can Cause Coughs

1.D 根據前文one third of the U.S. families have no Internet access and do not plan toget it 可知

2.B 由第二段……found the main reason potential customers say they do not subscribe tothe Internet is because of the low value to their daily lives theyrecognize……

4.B 由最後一段“Entertainment applications will be the key”一句可知

Their study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly athird more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered thebest cough medicine at present.

The researchers then measured levels ofcapsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how wellthe medicine are stopping coughs.

從第四段首句Ten healthy volunteers(志願者) were given theobromine, codeine orplacebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment.
