Do you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering around the shops fill you with terror?

For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! It’s more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food from the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason: price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is not knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called “showrooming”.

Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I’m not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.

Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that “people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying”. She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around. But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts or free gifts.

We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen, but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!

21. The two questions in Paragraph 1 are raised to ___________.

A. introduce the topic B. give two examples

C. compare different opinions D. get answers from readers

22. According to Amy Cashman, which is not the reason for showrooming?

A. The lack of time. B. The comfort of the sofa.

C. The shortness of money. D. The security of the product.

23. The author’s attitude towards showrooming is ___________.

A. critical B. neutral C. casual D. supportive

There is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander the Great, King of Greek. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. So, he lay helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, and I have three wishes. Please carry them out without fail.”

“My first desire is that,” said Alexander, “My physicians alone carry my coffin.” After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be spread with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected.” The king continued, “My third and last wish is that both my hands should be kept hanging out of my coffin.” Alexander’s favorite general kissed his hand and pressed it to his heart. “Oh, King, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why you make such strange wishes?”

Alexander took a deep breath and said, “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure anybody. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let people not take life for granted.”

“The second wish of spreading gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a bit of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is just a waste of time to chase wealth.”

“And about my third wish of having my hands hanging out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty-handed into this world and empty-handed out of this world.” With these words, the King closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.

24. The first paragraph suggests that Alexander ___________.

A. wanted to leave the world as he came empty-handed

B. realized that what he got in his life was nothing to him at all

C. spent a lot of time conquering many kingdoms and earned a great amount of wealth

D. regarded his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth as the most important things

25. The underlined word “clutches” in Paragraph 3 means “___________”.

A. terror B. attention C. control D. shadow

26. The author intends to ___________.

A. tell us the story of Alexander

B. stress the power of Alexander the Great

C. persuade people to realized what Alexander said

D. introduce readers to the instructive lessons of Alexander

27. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. The Death of Alexander B. The Greed of Alexander

C. Three wishes of Alexander D. The Life of Alexander

On October 24, 1929 — “Black Thursday”—a wave of panic selling of stocks(股票)swept the New York Stock Exchange. The Great Depression began. By 1932, thousands of banks and businesses had failed. Industrial production was cut in half, farm income had fallen by more than half, wages had decreased 60 percent and one out of every four workers was unemployed.

The Republican president, Herbert Hoover was unable to take measures to deal with the economic collapse. So in the 1932 election, he was defeated by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, who promised “a New Deal for the American people”.

Within the “Hundred Days”, Roosevelt rushed through Congress a number of laws to aid the recovery of the economy.

The Federal Emergency Relief Administration aided state and local relief funds. The Agricultural Adjustment Administration paid farmers to reduce production, thus raising crop prices. The National Recovery Administration regulated fair competition among businesses and minimum wages for workers.

The Work Progress Administration (WPA) was one of the most effective of the New Deal measures. Financed by taxes collected by the federal government, the WPA created millions of jobs by undertaking the construction of roads, bridges, airports and other public buildings. It kept workers in the job, thus preserving their skills and their self-respect.

The New Deal programs did not end the Depression. But the economy improved as a result of this program of government intervention (介入).

D. the Great Depression began

29. The New Deal is a number of laws ___________.

A. to deal with economic problems

B. to help state and local relief funds

C. to aid the workers to finish their stock selling

D. to make young people construct road and airports

30. The WPA was an effective measure because ___________.

A. it ensured workers’ minimum wages

B. it provided financial aids to workers

C. it preserved workers’ skills and self-respect

D. it provided workers jobs of building roads and airports

31. In which section of the newspaper will you properly read this article?

A. Culture. B. Economy. C. Discovery. D. Humanity.

We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby… Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse (配偶) gets his or her act together; when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vocation; when we retire. The truth is, there’s no better time than right now. If not now, when? Our life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, and a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.” This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. So treasure every moment that you have.

And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school; until you get married; until you get divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy….

Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don’t need money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one’s watching.

32. In the third paragraph, the author uses Alfred Souza’s quote in order to ___________.

A. support his viewpoint

B. introduce one more topic

C. enrich the content of the article

D. compare their different views on happiness

33. The underlined word “this” in the second paragraph probably refers to ___________.

A. Life will be better after we get married and have a baby.

B. Our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together.

C. When we retire, we are able to go on a nice holiday.

D. Our life is always filled with challenges.

34. The best title of the text might be___________.

A. Owning the Present is Owning the Future

B. Pursuing Happiness is Nature of Us Humans

C. Happiness is a Journey

D. How to Possess Real Happiness

35. The main idea of the second paragraph is that___________.

A. Only when we get whatever we want can we feel our life is complete

B. Whatever happens in our life, we should live at present

C. We can always wait to enjoy happiness in the future

D. We cannot enjoy happiness now because we are facing many challenges

第二節 (共5小題,每小題2分,滿分10分)

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there. 36 They teach you a lesson, or help you figure out who you are or who you want to become.

37 They may be a roommate, a neighbor, a professor, a friend, a lover, or even a complete stranger. Sometimes things that happen to you may seem horrible at first, but later you will find that without those difficulties you would have never realized your potential. 38 It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless.

The people who affect your life help to create who you are and who you become. 39 In fact, they are sometimes the most important ones.

If someone loves you, give love back to them not only because they love you, but because they are teaching you how to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.

40 They have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whomever you open your heart to.

Make every day count. Appreciate every moment.

A. Learn a lesson in life each day that you live.

B. They serve some sort of purpose.

C. Even the bad experiences can be learned from.

D. You never know who these people may be.

E. If someone hurts you, or breaks your heart, forgive them.

F. If you don’t believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you.

G. Without these small tests, life would be like a smooth road to nowhere.

第二節 書面表達

Low – carbon Living

Recently, my classmates and I participated in the activity of Low – Carbon Living organized by the WWF. On the first day, we chose to go to school by bike or on foot rather than by bus or car. Before we left the classroom, we made sure the lights and the computer were switched off. In order to make full use of paper, we began to write on both sides. Besides, while shopping, we no longer used plastic bags but carried environmentally friendly ones.

I think what we did on that day was meaningful, which helps us to form a good habit. We should also call on the people around us to do something for low – carbon living. Only in this way will the earth he a good place to live on.
