Keeping a pet cat puts owners at a greater risk of going blind, but a dog appears to protect eyesight,a new study suggests.

Scientists have discovered that dogs and cats carry antigens(杭原)which can cause different immune responses(免疫反應)in humans. While the allergen(過敏原)which dogs carry reduces the chance of developing glaucoma(青光眼)一the second leading cause of blindness in the UK--- owning a cat nearly doubles the risk of getting the eye disease.

Many pet owners suffer allergic reactions to their pets but still choose to keep them. However, the new study suggests that even a small immune response could lead to blindness. The study by the University of California,Los Angeles, found that cat owners who reacted to their pet allergen had a 90 percent increased risk of glaucoma compared with non-pet owners. But dog owners were 20 percent less likely to get the disease.

Keeping a dog also has the added benefit that owners are outside more which helps to protect against short-sightedness.

"Not only is a dog man’s best friend,he may also save your sight,”said British laser eye surgeon Dr David Allamby. "Cats could cause our immune system to react in a way that leads eyes to the development of glaucoma. Exposure(接觸)to dogs appears to be linked to the opposite effect and could be protective against the disease."

The researchers believe that dogs are healthier for humans because they spend more time out-doors

"The protective effect of dogs could be due to their natural antigens in their dead skin, but might also be because they spend more time outdoors and are happy to get dirty, whereas cats are cleaner animals." said Dr Anne Coleman,of University of California,Los Angeles.

Schools are finding many ways to deal with teacher shortages as the school year is coming. But what really needs to be done to fix this annual problem, says The New York Times’Frank Bruni,is to give the teaching profession a reboot. Teaching has become one of the least popular professions. When the economy improves, people turn their attention elsewhere,to professions that promise more money, more independence,or more respect.

With starting salaries for teachers hardly reaching ¥30,000 per year, any student graduation from college with student debts is going to turn to professions that can promise more money. The average teacher is struggling to provide for families and keep up with financial plans.

As for independence, the political battles over education, along with the lasting discussion on what's the best education, have left many teachers feeling like punching bags(攻擊目標)cy-makers don't know what's actually occurring inside the classroom, and make legislation(法規)

without considering teachers’opinions. Also, licensing requirement differences across states make it difficult for teachers to find jobs in other states.

Bruni says the first step in fixing the mess has to start with adding the respect that hard-working educators need and deserve. "To do this is to make becoming a teacher more attractive. "Bruni said, and mentioned Finland, where teachers are highly respected because entering the profession needs strict training.

The development and prosperity(繁榮)of our nation depend on teaching no less than on Wall Street's plans or Silicon Valley's innovations(革新) let’s make the classroom。destination as exciting and meaningful as any other.

The college I attended as a young man was a collection of beautiful, red brick buildings built along the side of a hill. At the bottom of the hill was the closest town. Getting back to the dorms from the town during the cold, winter months was a hard trip. For those who had been drinking at the town bars,it often led to many falls as they walked up the sidewalks.

On one December day a friend and I were on the way to the closet town. We didn’t like the idea of walking downhill on a sheet of ice,but the dinner that day was worth a try. As we walked towards the town,a man appeared, with worn and dirty clothes and wild gray hair. He smelt strongly of alcohol. When he got close,he stopped and asked for a few dollars. I stepped back at first and all of the warnings from others played out in my mind. Yet,when I looked into his sad eyes,I felt warmth in my heart. I pulled out my wallet and gave him some money. As we walked on,my friend said that the man was probably going to spend that money on alcohol. I thought about it and said,"What he does with the money is his choice. Sharing it was mine."

I have looked back on that memory so many times over the years. If I had done it all over again,I would have talked to the man, given him more money, and maybe shared a hug with him as well.

We all come into this world from LOVE and when we leave it,we will return to LOVE. Are you going to help just yourself or are you going to help others as wells It’s up to you!

You may have read about confidence. But reading about confidence, and actually achieving it, are very different issues. You can read about it your entire life, but you will not have it until you make a move to achieve it.

If you are going to do something about your confidence level, you really have to make a positive decision to get started, and then get along with it. 36 Watching and reading about it will not do you any good at all. The reality is that you are going to have to make that first critical move.

Reading theory alone is not enough. 37 Why,you might ask? Confidence is not theory.

It is a feeling and a state of mind. Therefore,it is not possible for anyone to build confidence without having to do something about it.

Money and gold will not buy yon confidence. It is not something that comes ready-made,off the shelf in a supermarket. The responsibility lies with one person and one person only. 39

As soon as you take some sort of action, something will happen:you will gain experience. Whatever that experience is, it becomes an asset(所有物)that is yours to use and also to share.

Someday that experience may help you. 39 Keep doing things, repeatedly if necessary, and your knowledge and skill base will grow. As it grows, your confidence will increase. The better you get at whatever it is,the more confidence you will have,Furthermore, that extra knowledge and experience forms a foundation for the next level. 40

A. And that is you.

B. Action is required.

C. You will probably make mistakes.

D. Self-confidence is something unique.

E. If you do nothing, then nothing will happen.

F. It may even help you to advise somebody else.

G. Before you know it,you will be building a skyscraper.

Tom

請根據帖子的內容給他提出幾點建議。注意:詞數110左右。

Hi, Tom,

It is of great importance to learn to make better use of your time. I’d like to offer some advice.

First of all, you should make a list and select the most important and urgent things. It is wise to finish them first. What’s more, you should make full use of tiny pieces of time. For example, you can do some reading when you are waiting for a bus, or practice listening on your way to school. Last but not least, focus on your most productive time of day and you will get twice the result with half the effort.

In a word, time, like water in sponge, can be squeezed out if you like. I hope you will find my advice useful.
