If you intend to pay a visit to America, here are a number of outstanding websites that can make your American dream come true.

www. 101usaholidays. co. uk

This is the latest offering that features 101 holiday ideas to the USA. It’s a diverse selection, ranging from touring in the footsteps of Martin Luther King to a golfing break in Arizona and a cycling and wine-tasting trip in California’s Napa Valley. Narrow down what you’re looking for — whether by price, region, theme and who will be traveling — and then just the photos of the relevant holidays remain on view. It’s a really clever design.

http://byways. org

The National Scenic Byways Program covers 150 memorable roads. Some are natural scenic routes, such as Route l along the California coast. Others focus on history (such as Route 66) or man-made attractions (the Las Vegas Strip). For each, you’re provided with a map telling the route’s length and how long is allowed.

www. oyster. com

This is the best website for reviews of hotels in US cities and tourist sites. There are photos of each hotel. Importantly, these are not promotional photos provided by the hotels, but more honest and showing ones taken by inspectors. From the 243 hotels reviewed in New York, you can narrow down what you are looking for by locations, facilities and styles, or just pick out a selection of the best.

http: //seaworldparks. com

SeaWorld in San Diego can make dreams come true, but the price is not affordable for the majority of people. So turn to the long-established, giving big discounts on tickets, hotels and dining at seaworldparks. com.

Just a few months ago, Leo Grand’s life was terrible. Homeless since losing his job in 2011, he spent his days begging and nights sleeping on the streets of Manhattan’s West side. Then last summer, a young man made him a strange offer that changed his life.

24-year-old software engineer Patrick McConlogue, who had been seeing the 38-year-old homeless man for three years on his way to work every morning, asked Leo whether he would like $100 to spend on anything he wished or learn how to code (編碼).

Leo picked the latter. True to his word, Patrick returned the following day with a few books on the subject, a cheap but durable laptop computer and charging accessories, and most importantly, daily lessons every morning before McConlogue was due at his office. Regardless, Leo took the opportunity to learn, Patrick followed through on his promise, and a friendship was born.

Leo turned out to be a fast learner. After a few months of strict learning how to code, the two men released Trees For Cars, a ride share app that Leo coded all by himself. The mobile app allows people to help the environment and save money by carpooling.

It works as follows: Anyone wanting a ride can enter in the address of his or her destination. The app will suggest drivers that drive to that or a nearby location. The person wishing to get a ride can pick one and send an invitation. If the other person accepts, they will be connected. As a way to encourage users, the app tracks how much CO₂ is saved by the passengers who get rides with others.

Trees For Cars saw about 15,000 downloads across both Apple and Android stores, bringing in about $14,000. Various cuts to the stores/platforms themselves add up to about 30%, and the rest go to Leo.

While this is an amazing achievement, neither of them is satisfied with what they have done. Leo has already begun working on the second version of the app and also plans to apply for a job as a programmer.

As for Patrick, he is trying to expand the tutoring program and already has 150 programmers willing to teach people to code for an hour a day for two months. All he needs to do now is work out how to organize the effort.

24. What did Leo choose to do when given help?

A. To get $100 to spend.

B. To learn how to code.

C. To read a few books on the subject.

D. To buy a cheap but durable laptop computer.

25. The app Trees For Cars was designed in order to _________.

A. make a big fortune to help needy people

B. give directions about how to go to a location

C. encourage riders to share cars with others

D. calculate the amount of CO₂ around the users

26. How much money has Leo earned for Trees For Cars?

A. About $15,000 B. About $14,000 C. About $4,000 D. About $10,000

27. Which of the following words can best describe Patrick McConlogue?

A. Thoughtful B. Helpful C. Productive D. Creative

For the past week, many Chinese people have been very excited because they have witnessed another great achievement in China’s space program.

China’s manned spacecraft Shenzhou-11, which was launched on Oct 17 from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu, successfully docked (對接) with the Tiangong-2 space lab on Oct 19, reported Xinhua News Agency. The docking happened at 3:31 am. while the craft passed 393 kilometers over Southwest China.

“The pair were just above Chinese territory (領土) when the spacecraft had the meeting with the lab,” Sun Jun, deputy chief engineer of Beijing Aerospace Control Center, told Xinhua.

The Shenzhou-11 manned spacecraft is carrying two male astronauts, 50-year-old Jing Haipeng and 38-year-old Chen Dong. The mission is the third spaceflight for Jing, who is the commander of the two-man crew. And it is the first for Chen, who said that he is looking forward to experiencing things that are impossible on Earth, including weightlessness.

After the docking, they entered the space lab Tiangong-2. They will live in the space lab for a month to carry out different aerospace experiments.

Of the experiments, three were designed by Hong Kong middle school students and chosen in a science competition. The experiments include one that has taken silk worms into space. The silk worms were put in a small capsule, and their activities can be seen through the glass in the middle of the capsule. They are expected to spin and cocoon (結繭) in space.

Hong Kong students wanted to know if the silk produced in the space would be thicker and tougher, and whether this type of silk could be used to produce special suits like spacesuits.

And this mission shows China’s confidence in its space program. “Shenzhou-11 is a new beginning. It means that the early stage of China’s manned space program will soon be over,” Zhang Yulin, deputy commander-in-chief of China’s manned space program, told Xinhua.

New research shows that biological clock disorder is a growing health problem around the world. Time zone changes, inner body clock disorder and irregular food and exercise patterns can all result in a sleep debt.

As a saying goes, “The early bird catches the worm.” People who rise early feel happier and more satisfied with life overall, compared to night owls. But the good news for teenagers is that most people become earlier risers as they age, and this change is also associated with greater feelings of happiness.

Researchers at the University of Toronto asked more than 700 people about their preferred time of day and how healthy and happy they generally feel. They then compared the responses of the group of younger adults aged 17 to 38 with older people aged 59 to 79. Only about seven percent of young adults are morning larks(百靈鳥), while by age 60 most people preferred to be up with the dawn. Just seven percent of the oldest people in the study described themselves as night owls. "We found that older adults reported greater positive emotion than younger adults, and older adults were more likely to be morning-type people than younger adults," study researcher Renee Biss from the University of Toronto reportedly told LiveScience. The "morningness" was associated with greater happiness emotions in both age groups.

Morning types also tended to report that they felt healthier than the late risers, according to the study that published in the journal Emotion. The researchers said that this apparent health benefit could come from the extra sleep they would enjoy, as their sleep could not only make them feel more energetic, but may also improve their immune system. "Evening people may be more likely to suffer social jetlag(時差反應); this means that their biological clock is out of sync with the social clock," Ms Biss said. "Society's expectations are far more organized around a morning-type person's schedule." "An evening person may go through their week feeling unhappy because they have to get up earlier than they would like to."

But Ms Biss said there was hope for night owls as it was possible for them to turn themselves into morning people." One way to do it is to increase your natural light exposure early in the morning, and to wake up earlier and go to bed earlier," she said. "It's easiest if you have a consistent schedule, to make sure you are waking up at the same time every day."

32. The 700-people research shows that _____.

A. few old adults go to bed early

B. early risers are more likely to feel happy

C. both groups have seven percent of early risers

D. early risers tend to sleep less but feel more energetic

33. What does the underlined phrase “out of sync” in paragraph 4 mean?

A. Out of touch.

B. Out of line.

C. Out of breath.

D. Out of style.

34. According to the passage, why do the evening people feel unhappier?

A. Because they fail society's expectations.

B. Because they lack enough natural light exposure.

C. Because they don't have a consistent schedule.

D. Because they can't enjoy their sleep as they like.

35. Which of the following can serve as the best title of the text?

A. Happy Early Risers

B. Happy Older Adults

C. Happy Night Owls

D. Happy Late Risers

Evaluating (評估) Sources of Health Information

Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of health information. Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to find relevant information, how to separate fact from opinion, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information and the reliability of sources. 36. ______

Go to the original source. Media reports often simplify the results of medical research. Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science. Think about the type of study. 37. ______

Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior “contributes to” or is “associated with” an outcome; this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result. 38. _______ Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.

Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements. 39. ________ Evaluate “scientific” statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖騙術).

40. _________ Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.

Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about the health problems will serve you well throughout your life.

A. Make choices that are right for you.

B. The goal of an ad is to sell you something.

C. Be sure to work through the critical questions.

D. And examine the findings of the original research.

E. Distinguish between research reports and public health advice.

F. Be aware that information may also be incorrectly explained by an author’s point of view.

G. The following suggestions can help you sort through the health information you receive from common sources.

It’s reported that many people died of traffic accidents in each year. Road safety has aroused the wide attention of the public. Many rules have been made to reduce the traffic crashes, especially the one involved in the pedestrians. In my opinion, we should take road safety seriously in our daily life. While used the road, we must walk on the pavement, if possibly. Therefore, car drivers should obey the traffic rules, that is both good for themselves and others.

In the word, obeying the traffic rules is what all of us should pay attention to particularly. Only by doing this we protect us as well as others.
