it用作人稱代詞，主要用於指事物或動物。如：
He aimed at the bird and missed it. 他瞄準那隻鳥卻沒打中。
He brought out his dictionary and looked the word up in it. 他拿出詞典來查這個詞。
但是，it有時也用於指人，主要有以下用法：
1. 用於指代性別不明的嬰兒。如：
Her new baby is tiny. It only weights 2 kilos. 她剛生出的孩子特別小，只有兩公斤重。
2. 用於指明或確認某人的身份。如：
“Listen. Someone is crying.”“Oh, it must be Mary.”“聽，有人在哭。”“噢，一定是瑪麗。”
Someone must have been here. But we have no idea who it was. 一定有人來過，但我們不知道是誰。
對於身份不明的人，我們要確定其身份，可以用it;但是，如果是指代身份明確的人，則不能用it，而要根據情況用he或she。比較：
A tall man stood up and shook hands with her. It was the general manager. 一個高個子站起來同她握了手，他是總經理。
The general manager just called. He told us to wait for him at the gate. 總經理剛來過電話，他叫我們在門口等他。
3. 在答語中，it常用來指本人，如說：It’s me. / It’s Peter.
